From the very first issue of the manga, it's been clear that the epic battles and the brutal fights with horrifying monsters in Berserk are an essential part of its story of a dark and grim world. Over the decade-spanning run, Guts has done battle with monsters, humans, and entire armies by himself. These intense, memorable battles and fight scenes are the best part of the series and go a long way in establishing the series as a Dark Fantasy standout.
9 Guts vs. Zodd Guts's first battle with Zodd does not go well for the warrior. Even with the assistance of Griffith, Guts is clearly outclassed and virtually helpless, giving a glimpse at both the high stakes of the series and the sheer power of the Apostles. There's a brief moment of hope as Guts seems to score a decisive blow when he manages to cut off Zodd's arm. Utterly unphased, Zodd bludgeons Guts with his severed arm before reattaching it.
6 The Night Raid Compared to what would come later in the series, the action in episode #3 of the 1997 Berserk anime is brief, small-scale, and fairly mundane.
