The Alabama Department of Transportation said the I-65 South rest area near Greenville will be replaced after the current facility is demolished. The replacement will be larger and will have more restroom space, including those for families. The project is expected to start sometime in early May, according to ALDOT. During construction, the rest area and parking lot will remain closed to the public. The $60 million sale is expected to close in May, with the collection of tolls to cease at noon on the date of the closing, officials said.
Montgomery-based W.S. Newell & Sons won the bid for the project, which is expected to last up to two years. The northbound rest area is not affected by this project and will remain open, though similar plans are being finalized, and funding is being sought for that facility’s upgrade in the future.
