A small plane carrying six people crashed Monday inside of Lake Clark National Park, according to officials with the National Park Service.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

Clint Johnson, the NTSB’s Alaska region chief, said that while the investigation is in the preliminary stages, there are signs pointing to engine failure as the cause of the accident. The plane — a de Havilland Beaver operated by Talon Air Service, a Soldotna-based charter business — crashed near Kijik Lake, which sits roughly 150 miles southwest of Anchorage and just over 100 miles from Kenai. All six onboard the plane were rescued by an Alaska Air National Guard helicopter crew, composed of one pilot and five passengers.

“ELT is usually activated either on impact, or you can actually physically turn it on. How that originated, I don’t know at this point right now,” Johnson said.
