Some people within communities are "putting their lives" and "personal safety at risk" to support young people against paramilitary control and coercion, the Northern Ireland Children's Commissioner has said.
You can hear his wide-ranging interview on issues including education, school absence, poverty and mental health in full, on the UTV Podcast. The level of persistent school absence is Northern Ireland is on the rise - something that the commissioner said is "worrying". "But I go back, my default position is Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. That’s the voice.
Another area of concern for the commissioner is the budget and its impact on children and young people."I can’t accept that. What I will do though is work with government, with officials, with politicians and hopefully with the secretary of state to look at the Northern Ireland budget. It’s not fit for purpose.
