Boys are now more likely to kill themselves than to be killed in a motor crash. Girls are nearly 50% more likely to injure themselves in a suicide attempt than to face an unplanned pregnancy

s, when the term “teenager” had been popularised, it brought to mind trouble. Spotty youths who engaged in risky behaviour outside the house—getting drunk, pregnant or into car crashes—were “the number one fear of American citizens”, wrote Bill Bryson in his memoir, “The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid”. Today, the risks American teens face come from within. .The rise in youth suicide is part of a broader increase inproblems among the young.

Experts have a reasonable understanding of how to help prevent suicide and better protect against such thoughts. Not all young people are equally at risk. Although girls in America are much more likely to contemplate ending their lives, or injure themselves in attempting to do so, teen boys are nearly three times as likely to die from suicide. Young people who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual are three times as likely to feel suicidal.

America is also exceptional for its availability of guns. Use of a firearm is the most common method of suicide for boys, which helps explain why they are more likely to die from an attempt than girls. Easy access to a lethal method is one of the biggest risk factors for someone in despair. In Switzerland, after 2003 suicide rates among men of military-service age dropped sharply after the country halved the size of its army, which often requires soldiers to take weapons home.

Being locked up during the pandemic increased feelings of isolation and loneliness for many youngsters. There is increasingly compelling evidence of the harm inflicted by school closures on children’s development and mental health. Covid appears to have hurt the mental health of younger people disproportionately, says Richard McKeon at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This was “superimposed on a longer-term upward trend in youth suicide,” he adds.

That’s God Talking to them And they can’t take the pressure cause they know he is Right

Cuz it’s a mental illness and they won’t get help since everyone has convinced themselves it’s normal. Any mental illness left alone will do this.

Read Johann Hari who in his book on addiction says that addiction is very largely about current society where there is little quality or quantity interaction.

Would they be that way inclined even if they were heterosexual?

Sad but true thanks for getting that info out there.

In Ireland the cause is clear & has been identified by our former PresidentIRL Mary McAleese on number of occasions i.e. the bigoted teachings of the Catholic Church. I don't know cause in places where CatholicBishops have little influence! ACPInIreland we_irl FrBrianDarcy

Maybe it's because it's a mental health issue

Not a surprise. Sadly these people have no good place to go for help. They know they are struggling and yet we live in a country that looks them in the face and tells them its OK, yet they know they are not. Talk about an awful place to be.

They're probably not missing out on much...

Lack of hope another.

Lack of mentors is big problem

Maybe, instead of continuing to let large companies pollute at will with tiny fines & 'look the otherway-isms' we should be taking the money directly from the source of these pollutants causing the uptick in mental health issues from pollution for health care, research, help.

Pathetic

Well it's good about them nit facing an unplanned pregnancy. That's due to the wide use of birth control measures.

Women

What

Background techniques have been applied by the society but it didn’t work on me & it won’t

Just means our society sucks in terms of its social structure for citizens.

Happy yet? And why do boys do themselves in pray tell? Another boy? No. A girl? Unlikely. Hopelessness? What else? If as a society we cannot ensure our young men & women have hope for happy healthy lives together then there will be no families filled with joy & everything is over

Medications were the sole cause of my attempt. Psychiatric medications are very dangerous, having almost killed me twice. Won't touch them again. Nor will my kids or I ever see a psychiatrist. Ever! They don't understand what they're prescribing.

Twististics?

Bartonella infection on the brain a huge cause of suicide amongst young males

I have a cure, come to China. They need to learn socialist core values.

YOLO rhetorics. And elders don't play games. And life's important cuz games. No games no life, so...

This younger generation lacks leadership and a moral structure for them to feel confident and valued...its going to get worse until the media, politicians and most importantly, parents step up and become more disciplined..

Not trying to point any fingers but the predatory chaos of major media plays a significant part in this.
