Photograph: Karen Robinson/The ObserverPhotograph: Karen Robinson/The ObserverWarehouse workers for Clarks have accused the 200-year-old shoemaker of betraying its philanthropic roots by threatening them with the sack if they don’t accept significant pay cuts.
Does the Guardian still give its freelance staff a 'month off' every year before rehiring them?
Clarks used to be a decent company making good shoes, which I bought. Now they are a dreadful outfit making lousy over-priced tat which I never buy. Why's that, I wonder?
I won't be buying another pair of clarksshoes under those conditions.
Guardian missing the mark yet again with this headline. it's owned by big money now.... Not the descendants of Elizabethan Quakers
At the very least, this practice used to be illegal in the UK. Even now, Clarks will be leaving itself open to breach of contract and unfair dismissal claims if it immediately refills positions after making staff redundant.
clarksshoes have been doing this for years. They have a terrible reputation for fire and rehire. About time they got negative press for this insidious practice. nofireandrehire
The saddest part is you can buy Clarksshoes on the net only they are not marked Clarks and they cost about half Clarks rate. This fire/rehire system is frankly disgusting
Whilst this is disgraceful, where were those protesting when Clarks decided to outsource its manufacturing to the Far East, we had government's rubbing their hands at reducing CO2 emmission when in fact we had exported them from the UK to Asia
They've been doing that for decades. Clarks shoes aren't what it use to be. Bullying and corruption.
IPlAYuPaY3 😬😬😬
Have you seen the price of Clarks' shoes?
Emboldened by BritishGas Centrica FireAndRehire shame earlier this year and other examples of MaKiNgUkWaGeSmOrEcOmPeTiTiVe, no doubt. GreatBritishGasFire ClarksFireandRehire DesertBoots Wallabies ClarksShame
Clarks – which was taken over by a Hong Kong-based private equity firm, LionRock Capital, in March – closed its last UK shoemaking plant in 2006. But the company, in which the Clarks family now hold a minority stake, headquarters and main distribution centre are still in Street.
This is now a Hong Kong capitalist junta. Bankrupt them .
An engineer told me recently that this practice has been going on at British Gas?
This is global capitalism for you folks. Nearly all our original Quaker founded companies (including Cadbury) have been taken over by multi-nationals to the detriment of workers & consumers. Also public services are doing similarly with ‘restructuring’.
If the Government were serious about 'Leveling Up' our work force and 'Protecting Our Economy' they would get rid of the Loop Hole that allows this Rehire Travesty!! Utter Disgrace!!
I stopped buying Clark’s shoes when they closed their U.K. factory and had them made abroad, I don’t mind paying extra for quality shoes made in the U.K. but won’t pay high prices for foreign made muck.
good luck
