The stretch of Wilmslow Road that runs through Withington has long maintained the air of a traditional village close to the heart of Manchester. But many locals feel the petals have long fallen off a high street once renowned for its choice of thriving, independent businesses.
Public consultations on the project are ongoing, but residents and groups have long been calling for to recapture the 'vitality' of the high street they remember. In 2021, Dave Payne, chair of the Withington Village Regeneration Partnership, told councillors: "I’m Withington born and bred, and I have fond memories of what it was like growing up."It was full of vitality and vibrancy, and it was a real focal point of the community.
While some of these businesses and amenities, or their successors, still survive, many have been consigned to memory - including two of the pubs that made up Wilmslow Rd's 'Three Lions' - The White Lion and The Golden Lion. The amount of variety the local high street offers - in common with high streets across the country - has shrunk.
