The three giant circular Thornborough Henges near Ripon date back to around 3500 to 2500BC.

Three huge Neolithic monuments in Yorkshire which have been described as "the Stonehenge of the North" have been gifted to the nation.

"They are a link to our ancient ancestors, through thousands of years, inspiring a sense of wonder and mystery," he said. The central and southern circles were placed on the Heritage at Risk register in 2009 due to damage caused by livestock and rabbits.Historic England said archaeological finds in this area suggested the henges were probably built as ceremonial or ritual centres and may also have served as trading centres and meeting places.

Looks stunning, very like our Hill of Tara. Will be visiting later this month. 😀 Personally, I would drop the Stonehenge of the North label though as it's the stone circle, not the henge, that characterises Stonehenge.

a most important ancient site, Orion aligned as is the great pyramid site in Egypt. had it been in the S/E big business wouldn't have dared go near it! more evidence of inequality even in our history. the sooner we get independence the better! passport needed to enter the north

'Comparatively few people are aware of its significance - both locally and nationally'. I bet one of those few is theAliceRoberts. I trust the Prof will be pleased.

It’s very strange that henges like these appear all around the globe when humans couldn’t travel far 👽

This is brilliant news as you had to trespass to visit the site. Its part of a wider route in the area and not well known. Like the Devils arrows and Rudston stone.

Teachers' strike: Yorkshire staff walk out in pay rowMatt Perry, head teacher at Halifax Academy, says 'something has to change' as teachers walk out. Where is the dislike button when you need it I understand the reason they’re striking of a pair, but it’s not fair that children miss out on days of school and working parents find it harder Disgraceful from teachers, already over pampered A 'walkout' is downing tools and walking off the job. Strikes have high bars now to happen including % of members % of votes for and notice has to be given. You know this at and BBCNews but continue to use the term 'walkout' because it sounds more reckless.

'Appalling brutality': Failed asylum seeker who killed woman, 87, in Yorkshire village detained indefinitely in hospitalA failed asylum seeker who killed an elderly woman he lived with in a picturesque North Yorkshire village has been detained indefinitely at a secure hospital. Disgusting There would've been civil unrest if this happened 25 years ago. This is more proof Britain is dying than any economic b.s 'claimed asylum in 2013 after his student visa expired. His claim was refused and subsequent appeals were also unsuccessful, as was a separate claim he made in 2020. This was outstanding at the time of Mrs Blainey's killing' Another cash cow for the human rights lawyers. Awful story.
