The devastating blaze at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris has evoked memories of the fire that took hold in York Minster 35 years ago Now York Minster are offering their support

The battle to halt the devastating blaze at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris evoked memories of the fire that took hold in York Minster 35 years ago.

In the early hours of 9 July 1984, lightning set fire to York Minster's south transept causing £2.25m damage.John David, a master mason at York Minster, said Notre-Dame could be rebuilt using traditional crafts. More than 100 firefighters tackled the blaze in the south transept of the church in the centre of York

"Some people think we can't do this sort of thing any more in traditional materials - we can, and so I think the roof will be reconstructed and put back on.

York minster cost 2.25m in 1980s pounds. Notre Dame estimated at billions. Why such a massive difference? Did we go to Ikea? 🧐

Anyone remember how that was reported on by the French?

OliviaBUtley I remember (re OliviaBUtley’s mother’s article) that BBC radio covered the York fire (which has broken out overnight) rather well - Brian Redhead on “Today” eulogising about the Minster’s significance in what were plainly his own words.

Typical BBC bias yet again, nobody on promoting cathedral fires, where’s the balance?!!!

Difference is, this was likely caused by muslim terrorists. Over 800 churches have been burned/vandalised in France in the last year. 50 have been attacked since February.

with god on our side

Just what has York cathedral to do with it. Try Grenfell Tower - no progress there.

Hundreds of millions raised already, but why didn't these billionaires not donate earlier. The French State were struggling to pay for renovations and in 2017 set up a charity. If they had offered donations sooner, this may have never had happened.

Or one that happened in Berlin on 27th February, 1933? Reichstag reichstagfire

The Church should collect the millions of half-burned and charred embers, have the Pope bless them, then exchange them for contributions toward a new cathedral.

People matter more than buildings....

yet mister apococryptical, it does remind one of the Great Windsor Fire and the concourse of Ceremony, most recently, We the Public saw Occasion ..Awh upon yer Yon media

Let’s support them with a contribution that matches theirs after the Windsor Castle Fire.

I prayer for it it sad

More relevant than realDonaldTrump advice.

so sad

YouTube incorrectly tags clips of Notre Dame fire with 9/11 attacksYouTube accidentally tagged clips of the fire engulfing Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris with details about the 9/11 terror attacks in New York. The error came from a fact-checking feature. It’s obviously terror- 12 churches in a week is terror Yeah but that was an error by machine. You willingly employed Katie Hopkins as a columnist. Who's really making the bad decisions here? Something doesn’t sound right? And no mention of these on msm?

Reporter slaps down Donald Trump's claim New York Times failed to observe basic tenet of journalismPresident attacks ‘corrupt’ newspaper – despite confirming its reporting by saying illegal immigrants could be transferred to sanctuary cities Sadly basic journalistic protocol is now extraordinary feats when dealing with a pathological liar. There is no need for the NYT to 'lie and cheat to make Trump look bad.' Trump lies and cheats and makes himself look bad every day. He should be slapped in the face on the spot by fact-check for every lie he spews out until he stops. Why aren’t the media doing this yet?
