One of Britain’s most dearly missed retailers is making an unexpected comeback next year. The store, famous for its pick ‘n’ mix sweets, children’s clothes, homewares, CDs and DVDs went into administration in 2008 and closed all of its UK stores by January 2009.
In an announcement this morning on the newly made Woolworth UK Twitter account, the retailer said: ‘Here to save 2020! Woolworths is coming back to your high street, as a physical store!AdvertisementShoppers walk past the closed Camden branch of Woolworths in January 2009 Once a staple of high streets across the country, Woolworths collapsed between December 27 2008 and January 6 2009.
Around 27,000 jobs were lost as 807 stores closed their doors after administrators Deloitte struggled to find a buyer. In 2009, Shop Direct bought the trademark and sold to customers online through Woolworth.com – but it just wasn’t the same for people with fond memories of the pick ‘n’ mix.More to follow.
Can't wait to visit this over priced pound shop again..
Yes they are calling themselves 'Woolsworth' and have also mentioned Very' in the their tweets.
They are only feeling jealous other stories are taking away their bankruptcy legend.
You have been taken in by a fake account. Delete your article. UKWoolworths is trolling.
Omg SheilaTubman PrincessNY2009
BREAKING: No it isn't, you've been massively fooled...
It’s a fake account - Please verify something before positing it out to thousands of people JamesHockaday_.
Based on what? If you say the twitter post where they spell 'woolworths' wrong twice in their own tweet, then you really are living up to those daily mail values on never knowingly being accurate or researching anything.
Sweet I hope we get one back In my town
if you're excited about this then you definitely voted Leave
No way! If they pull this off, they're officially the Comeback Kings of Retail! 👏🏿👍🏿
Too late, we already have Wilko
Havent the links of Wilko, Poundland, B&M and Home Bargains replaced the need for Woolworths? Can’t imagine we need any more of these kinds of shops?
You’re basing this on a couple of tweets! How are you sure that the account isn’t fake? Has this news been confirmed elsewhere?
lol you fell for it
here lads, I've got some magic beans to sell you, DM for details
Please don’t let this be fake news I’ll literally cry
ControlUrHealth Brilliant, wishing Woolies a very successful return to the UK towns and cities. 😃❤👍
This is suspicious. The news comes from a new Twitter account with no verification. Very own the name not just for online as the new Twitter page suggests but for all retail in the UK. I’ll believe it when I see it
Why?
Finally some great news , one of the big iconic original stores is coming back.
Pick n Mix! 🤣
alastairdick Exceptional timing 🤦
April’s Fool is in April
Really? Best shop I ever worked in ❤️
Wow! Seriously!
Why, what's the fucking point? Is some cheap emporia of shoddy goods and pick and mix really something a jaded populace is crying out for? No. It isn't.
Is the 'source' an unverified account which was only set up very recently?
Did you really take this “news” from a fake Twitter account
That is superb and positive news. Thanks for sharing
A lot of nostalgia about the pick n mix, but I bet no one on twitter is old enough to remember the broken biscuit counter!
What high street?
ShaneOhhh_
Pick n mix 😁😁😁😁
You sure about that?
As We Knew It?
Will they be seeing postcards as well, our local one had postcards for a while.
PicknMix
BREAKING: no it isn't
🤣
Got my first weekend job in Woolies! Memories!
They won't exactly be struggling to find retail rental space...
I see they managed to get their first sucker. Well done lads 👏 fakenews
This is good news.
Nice 👍🏼
This is the sort of news we need
Thought the pound shop was basically Woolworths now
Will they be selling cassettes?
Omg. I was just thinking about them.
🤷♂️
Jubbly. Pick and mix here we come :)
Greeneyedcurve Good Morning Sarah ,have a peaceful day❤️
PyeHumble its USP - taking on the supermarket discounters, will be a middle aisle that changes twice a week thats a giant pick n mix.
ameliah0206 😮🥺
HollyLWhitbread any chance we can have one in our high street instead of phone repair shops
Yes. What’s going to happen to Wilco
There will be plenty of cheap UK high street sites for a revived Woolworths.
Imagine how many free school meals that could pay for 😭
Guess the Pick-n-mix or Rona Salad Bar won't be there this time.
If this happens next year i will be excited
