Margaret Moore was left with bruises on her face and eyes by former England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has drawn criticism over her knighthood of Sir Geoffrey Boycott, who has been included in Theresa May’s honours list.
Women’s charities and campaigners are now calling for his knighthood for services to sport to be rescinded. ‘I said I’m not paying anything – I’m not sure I’ve actually got a million at the time. It’s a court case in France where you are guilty – which is one reason I don’t vote to remain in Europe – you’re guilty until you are proved innocent.‘That’s totally the opposite to England and it is very difficult to prove your innocence on another country, another language.‘And most people in England don’t believe it. I didn’t do it. Move on. It’s a cross I have to bear, right or wrong, good or bad.
Among those calling for Boycott’s knighthood to be taken away was BBC journalist Victoria Derbyshire said: ‘In 1998 a French court heard he punched then girlfriend Margaret Moore 20 times, which he denied.Co-acting chief executive of Women’s Aid Adina Claire said: ‘Celebrating a man who was convicted for assaulting his partner sends a dangerous message – that domestic abuse is not taken seriously as a crime.
I mean, all he did was play cricket. Does he really deserve a knighthood?
