She felt threatened

A furious woman claimed she was banned from a supermarket over a dispute with a banana. Diana Roffey, 60, said it all started when she queried the prices of the bananas after claiming to have been overcharged.

The supermarket chain is investigating the series of alleged incidents between the 60-year-old and the store manager. Diana said: “I feel very strongly about this because if you don’t stand up and challenge this behaviour it will continue. After she had paid at the self-service checkouts, she noticed that she had been overcharged on the single item of fruit and got the money back which she was owed. Diana, a former computer scientist and nursery teacher, was about to leave at this point but then decided the moral thing to do would be to ask them to correct the prices. This was so others wouldn’t be overcharged and have to go through the whole saga she’d just experienced.

It was then the trouble began to arise, she says the manager began to “harangue” her over the banana enquiry. She said he had an “aggressive look in his eyes” which she found intimidating. “He said ‘right, you’re not allowed to record – get out! He basically threw me out of the store and as he did so, he shouted at me that I was banned.”

Diana pointed this out to a member of staff who then fetched the manager. Coming face to face with the man again, they once again got into a heated confrontation which turned the heads of the other staff members. She claims the manager once again shouted at her that she was “banned” and had security escort her from the premises.
