Heading away to university was Kea-ra Jackson’s first taste of freedom – but looking after herself made her already fragile relationship with food worse.
‘I went to the GP in 2016 and was referred for counselling and during the first session, they explained that I had been diagnosed with binge eating disorder.’ ‘During a binge, you just eat and eat and eat and then you won’t really remember what you did or why you did it.’Kea-ra started to attend regular counselling sessions and worked through her issues with food, learning how to deal with the things that were triggering the condition and how to handle those feelings in a different way.
‘When we were talking about a journal, I was also getting more into Instagram and I was finding women talking about body positivity or body neutrality and that was really helping me,’ she explains.‘My partner at the time suggested I create one so I could share my own pictures as well as my struggles, thoughts and feelings.‘That was around December 2016 and since then, it has been really therapeutic and I have had so many opportunities from that.
She took part in the Perfectly Imperfect Campaign with a group of women walking over Tower Bridge in their underwear and she was invited to model swimwear on ITV’s This Morning, showing her body to millions on national TV.She says: ‘I was visibly plus size – I haven’t got perfectly smooth skin or an hourglass figure but I’m so proud of that moment.
