Retailers fear the coronavirus pandemic could permanently change consumer habits

Coronavirus has already triggered a wave of high street failures, from Oasis and Warehouse to Laura Ashley and Cath Kidston. Hundreds of thousands of retail workers have been furloughed, with the aim that they will return to the shop floor when stores are allowed to reopen.

Need an online purchase tax to enable high street providers and markets to return again.

Only if there are any shops left?

Yes! Local butcher and greengrocer are still there for me when big boys are not, and they deliver

I will - I can’t wait for someone else to make me a cup of coffee and to wallow in nice furnishings.

Yes! I most definitely will be.

That place should be locked down permanently. Consumerism has gotten into the very nucleus of the Masses there. Went there a few years ago and was displeased at the voracious appetite the people had for fashon. They need to be humbled and brought back to earth.

It may depend what’s left of the high street

I could murder a Nando's - so yes 😃

Our high streets were all boarded up anyway. Nothing to return to. Government should help small businesses move back to the high streets and make them the heart of our towns once more.

I see this as an opportunity for online boom. Goodbye Highstreet and hello cryptocurrency. INTU went under at just the right time. Couldn't Have Invested Sh*t!

Yes.

If mask wearing in all enclosed spaces is mandatory then yes, I would.

Not me, except maybe a garden store

Definitely. But we will have to adapt. Social distancing, perspex screens for staff behind the counter, hand sanitizer, etc. After the Spanish flu came the roaring twenties where people spent and lived like there was no tomorrow having seen many loved ones fall victim.

The dumb one's will.

Yes, we are all asking each other, “What’s the first thing you’re going to do after lockdown?” The answers range from hair cuts, hair done, restaurants, nails done, go on holiday (firstly buying holiday clothes, sun cream and the like).

Have you tried buying shoes online ?

High street was dead before all this

Retail yes maybe, like Gunwharf Quays. Not High Street as major shops there seem to have gone now. If Primark were online would never go to High Street again

Maybe these last few weeks have enabled the public to realise that 'needing' a bigger tv, disposable clothing, or yet more tat to cram into their tiny homes is vacuous, wasteful & unfulfilling. But this is Britain, so probably not.

I believe ppl might think twice before going to shop. However, as soon as this virus thingy vanishes from all ppl's mind all will be like it used to.

Yes, yes, yes.

I know THAT'S my biggest concern right now.

No because the media have done their best to make sure everyone is super paranoid about the slightest thing. You’ve made it that people will be too scared to leave their homes..... sadly, many thousands will lose their jobs because of this.

Most major chains are on life support, indies can't compete on price or stock, Intu are virtually bankrupt.... Only supermarkets will survive.

xijinping coming changes to hit. Nobody is safe

I hope so But why is a major shop being featured in the picture/ What about LOCAL High Streets?

Like a shot. If young children remain at home that would be an improvement, though.

I think the High Street will see a surge in shoppers especially women, the changes I think we will see is less eating out and more DIY projects.

Nah

Probably be more than glad to. Even those of us who hate shopping.

I hate online shopping. We are fortunate to have Cardiff as our nearest city for shopping, which has always (up to now) provided a good choice of stores, places to eat, etc. I can't believe how dismissive people are about so many people facing job losses. Callousness.

Probably not.

Less consumption and less importance attached to material goods is perhaps exactly the world needs.

I hope not.

1. Self care needs to open: nail and hair salons 2. Local community and yes, we need people working and learning to live with this new virus in a respectful way.

the high street was lost decades ago

Got a vaccine yet? If not, thoughts and prayers.

Probably not... it’s dead

Nope as most are dire!

Once a somewhat normal lifestyle can happen it will be very interesting to see what pans out.

not so fast..

Some And still people are gathering on mass on bridges clapping like loons ...... That's only the total in England though Social distancing enforced on the 29 March. Say 4 weeks to start appearing in death rate. I’d expect the rate to reduce significantly soon. Question for vsmacdonald : if nhs allowed non-emergency ppl to go to hospital (Like BorisJohnson ) would the success rate be GT 50%?

Which B&Q stores have reopened across the UK?The retailer shut all its stores on 25 March but is now reopening some to customers across the UK reopen? The one near me never closed. Businesses are now just going to unlock themselves at random, just as many locked them down independently of the govt. Seems its a lockdown by public consent, not by govt order. No need for B & Q to open at all
