Search the word"retirement" on the internet and your screen is filled with images of silver-haired folk dancing in their kitchens, surfing, getting into ridiculous yoga postures and cuddling grandchildren.
"We need to think about who we will be - who we want to be when our formal career ends. The people in our study who do that, tend to have a smoother transition."Retirement can give us more time to spend with family but it can also leave us feeling under-utilisedOne of the most revealing parts of the research came when they asked retirees how they described themselves.
"We asked them why they do this and they say it's because they don't want to be seen as someone who is out to pasture. One person said 'I don't want to be seen as yesterday's news I want to be the news right now'."'Wonderland of work' He sees denying older people their place in this"wonderland" as wrong, especially in countries with mandatory retirement ages.Mario Vargas Llosa writes every day but can those who have more physical jobs also work longer?
If you're a writer or an economist then working longer might be more possible than for those whose jobs are very physical. "Sometimes we talk about grey riots or silver riots taking place. If you raise the retirement age then people who expected to retire in one, two, three or four years, [then suddenly] they're not able to - because you've just changed the age at which they collect their pension.
Tories want you work till you drop.
Well I am retired and that is the truth.
Sorry but I have no sympathy for them. I had my career cut short in my prime, being diagnosed with leukaemia in my 30s, 18m before qualifying as a consultant. I may never be able to go back. But I’m studying/exercising/volunteering despite ill health. Only boring ppl are bored!
some do
What a disingenuous article. It quotes a couple of people with highly paid work (I won't call them jobs) and short flexible hours. They have a very high degree of autonomy and have had for years. Totally unreflective of most people's experience.
I don’t 😃
Best thing I ever did... 😉👍
By the time I retire, I'll be too old to enjoy it or afford it.
Tories didn’t stop me retiring at 55. I made appropriate life choices. Maybe people should look at their own choices and stop moaning.
Tory spin.
It always amazes me how people who work the most mundane of jobs can't think of anything to fill their time when they retire. Use your imagination, you fools!
Don't put your self down BBC. You lie about loads more than that.

Sounds like propaganda to encourage people to stay in work!! I loved my work but I love retirement more. No clock-watching and no deadlines - I do what I like when I like. Don't listen to the doom-mongers - retirement's great!
Tory propaganda machine at its best. I also woke up to 'news' this morning that 'an increasing numbers of Americans are working past 70'. Remind me again why I pay my licence fee - at the moment it feels like I am paying to be brainwashed.
10-2 and he does a bit of writing !!!! That isn't a job it's a bloody hobby.try rising at 5.30,6 30 at station, start at 8 lunch on the move finish 5 ,then 1 hour commute home to the suburbs for 42 years then told u got 5 more years to go instead of retirement
I've been retired for years. I proudly boast about it!
Has Mr Duncan-Smith been in touch by any chance?
Because when we are supposed to retire we still have to work, thanks to the Tories.
