As the TV adaptation of Philip Pullman’s epic fantasy His Dark Materials reaches our screens, one writer tells how the trilogy changed her life

As a child, I cavorted in Oxford colleges, rode atop armoured bears and swanned off to Svalbard to witness the majesty of the northern lights – all while remaining within the walls of an Edwardian terrace in Cardiff.

ElliottBlackwe3 It's true... until we start thinking for ourselves & deconstructing what we were taught. In my 20s, I realized that most of the books I was assigned in school, & the kids' programming I watched on TV, were blatant progressive propaganda. Once you recognize it, it loses its grip.

YNB Anyone remember this one? This book left quite an impression.

YNB My favorite books were the Chronicles of Narnia. I learned so much about the person I wanted to be from them, most importantly to stand up for my beliefs no matter what sort of evil tries to convince me otherwise!

REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES SHAPED MY PSYCHE

My parents bought for me a HUGE picture book “300 leagues in search of Mother” even just by writing this I get goosebumps. I loved the show on tv, even if it made me feel sad every now and then, I was always there watching it.

Well I read all the Mr Men books, over and over as a kid, what does that say about me now?

Makes me wonder what effect reading the guardian as a kid would have on the psyche 🤔

Children re-read. And every time they do so, a new door opens. The same book holds new meanings when a child revisits it in a couple of years. The blacks and whites become grey. The hearts become more embracing towards differences, towards the other. A favourite book is home.

YNB I read too much captain underpants...

I read the 'Mrs Piggle Wiggle' series by Betty McDonald when I was a little girl and I passed them down to my daughters and now my Grandchildren. If those Books shaped my 'psyche' as you say, them I guess I have a WONDERFUL SENSE OF HUMOR!

Really the experiences you have will shape your future. Woah. Mind blown.

That explains a lot with me then.

theblerdgurl Which is why representation in literature is critically important. Either you see yourself in characters and thus your own potential or you see your absence and wonder your importance or relevancy.

Because underdeveloped minds have difficulty differentiating fact from fiction. Think twice about everything to which you expose children.

Harry Potter is just an amazing way to explain difficult things. When I've talked about depression with my daughter, I've used The Dementors as an example. When I talk about politics now, Dolores Umbridge is basically Priti Patel.
