Research shows that smart people are more susceptible to fake news and conspiracy theories – but why?

Did you hear about the couple who decided to name their daughter Brexit? Or the fact that the regions voting leave also happened to be the areas afflicted by mad cow disease? How about the statement that smartphone radiation is causing brain damage and widespread insanity?

April fools right?

😂

Some of us were taught the foundations of critical thinking and ownership of our thoughts and truths with the simple guidance to never simply believe what we read or heard. Today we add 'see'. Today I would debate that our truths are based on minds already set with answers.

Define “smart”

Like my dad with Rachel maddow

Pattern recognition.

But smart people I guess you mean left leaning, cause I'm smart and I don't believe fake news such as your organisation

Wrong headline. It says maybe sometimes

Surely they're not so smart are they if that indeed is the case.!

Nonsense. Uneducated blue collar Trump supporters are the biggest consumers of fake news (e.g. pizzagate), followed by the elderly (60+) w/o college degrees. And the college educated, Mensans, book readers etc. where all shown to be more discerning & less susceptible to fake news

Yeap, because they over-think it.

Relying on outlets addicted to ratings & revenue from the very industries they supposed to be reporting on ( pharma, banking, fossil fuels) NOT SMART!

👀

Nowhere in the actual research cited by your article does it suggest that 'smart people' are more gullible. In fact, a careful reading of the paper points to a matter of differences in primary cognitive styles. Your misinterpretation of the research is part of the problem.

crikey ... .. that's a bit rich ... you're the kettle calling the frying pan grimy arse .. your news is complete shit .. that's why you need to invite people to pay for the privilege of reading your drivel

I believe everything TheOnion tells me, bask in my intellectual greatness

I thought this was an April’s fool article - given the content of what they said smart people fell for

April fools, right? Sorry, not buying your fake news.

Define smart.
