for the first time and could hardly stop myself from pointing out every tiny breadcrumb director Jordan Peele had trailed throughout the film. It was genius. Immediately afterwards I exploded with information and confused everyone in the room who, rightly, thought we were viewing it for the first time.I know it can make some people uncomfortable when I haven’t yet made it to the viewing part of my process.
There’s no doubt that spoilers can be a comfort. I have safety in knowledge and there are no jump scares. It can be quite a relief to know a character survives to the end of a film when they’re being fiercely pursued throughout. I also know exactly which movies I do not want to watch – horror will never be for me. Sometimes even the Wikipedia page can’t save me from a sleepless night, however. Shout out to Blair Witch Project, you absolute life ruiner.
I also understand that doing things my way means I’ve sacrificed some of the biggest movie twists of all time. I will never know what it feels like to gasp at Bruce Willis’ true identity or have Fight Club unravel in front of my eyes. I’m pretty sure my favourite directors would despise me for butchering their hard work.
I’m also familiar with the distrustful feelings my method provokes. My spoiler knowledge can put the room slightly out of balance. I already hold all of the cards and my friends just know I’m bursting to share all the secrets.
Most of the time, it's called reading the book 🤔
