Self-driving cars, robot surgeons: artificial intelligence promises a lot, but what has it delivered?

"It isn't just meant to be a smart cane, it's meant to be connected with transport networks and autonomous vehicles," Mr Feghali says. The idea is that Wewalk could interact with traffic lights to help people cross roads without needing to push a button, and could alert a bus to wait at a specific stop ahead of time.

Progress has been picking up in recent years as artificial neural networks have become more sophisticated. "That has led to a number of different innovations from facial recognition, to voice and speech recognition, as well as to some extent what you see on Netflix or Amazon in personalizing and predicting what you want to watch or buy," he says. The founder and chief technology officer of autonomous vehicle software company Oxbotica, Paul Newman, likened the development of deep learning as the step change for AI between a hand drill and a power drill.

The next stage of AI, Mr Mortensen says, is to allow Amy to be able to interact with other Amys to co-ordinate schedules. That means that if there is a network of 100 people who all use x.ai, Amy could effectively schedule meetings for all of these people to meet each other - and others - at convenient times and locations, factoring in their own preferences. This would be something even the ablest paid human assistant would not be able to do - and this is where AI is heading.

MAYBE IT HAS TRUMP AND BORIS COULD BE ROBOTS!!

we're are made in his image

It has

The tougher the challenge the thicker AI becomes!!

I look at Boris, Priti, The Donald and Jeremy too and I long for Artificial Intelligence because the natural sort seems in very short supply.

AI is alive well & making changes in industry, but, that’s not glamorous enough for the morons of the BBC to report

I'm glad, I wouldn't do well in a post apocalyptic world. I'm no John Connor.

Because the elite haven’t worked out how to reap all the benefits without causing an uprising yet

But it has. You aren’t paying attention.

Because technology is there but people are poorer than they ever where!!

What do you think Alexa and the like is for? Why spend vast amounts of money when you can get the general public to do your work for you?

It has

If you want to know, just ask Al, or Alexander as we call him..

It' just recent...Wait for anither decade and see if you can ask the same question again..

Coz it only exists in fiction. Intelligence is a measure of understanding, interpreting, translating. You could have the most “intelligent” TV in the world, but it won’t understand you could save energy by turning the light off in the living room when you go make a cuppa tea

It's costs.

Because is moving very slow! And it's way to expensive and more Apportunity and ideas gets blocked!

GTFO

Because technologies don't 'change the world'. World wars do. Technologies incrementally and selectively change aspects of our lives, not always for the better. Think surveillance states and personal data appropriation, for example.

It has, but not at the low level we thought. AI has taken over at a middle management level in the US. Think Amazon monitoring of worker efficiency OR computer coders who are tracked by keystroke and time in front of computer and docked pay if not meeting standard.

driverless cars (they don't work) only last week Judge ruled in a fatal crash driver was too reliant on robotic controls? (thought that was the idea): companies don't want to invest, money in A.I in telephony jobs some current software systems in energy companies are ridiculous

almurray can’t do everything

Because it's not as advanced as we thought it would be.

Yeah come on almurray what are you waiting for!

🤓 Because Al seems to be playing golf all day.

Shouldn't it be able to answer that question for you?

i dont believe you are human

Oh but it has
