One explanation for why people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds are dying in disproportionately high numbers is demography. The virus hit London first and hit it hardest. But even when you take these regional differences into account there is a mismatch. In particular, if you take into account that ethnic minorities are generally younger – particularly important for Covid-19 where 90% of deaths are in people over 60 – the ethnic differences become even more stark.
An outside perspective: I live in a BAMEless East European country. Our poor people have living condition as bad as the ones in Britain, if not worse. Tiny flats, bad jobs, bad food. And yet, they don't die any more often than the rest. So maybe covid19 just likes chocolate. 😛
If a higher percentage of white people were dying, BAME would be whinging that they weren't been given the same opportunity to die and that proved the inherent racism in UK society
How can you say that there are all those differences in likelihoods of ill-Health between ethnicities and THEN say 'but there's no Genetic differences' ? It doesn't make sense ?
It's easy to overlook the point that the article is making and get yourself all worked up about PC. There are a variety of things which may have a part to play other than genetics. Some suggest that those from the ISC are more likely to have had the BCG for example.
This is an astonishing piece. “Genetics sounds like an easy get-out clause, but it isn’t. Ethnicity is a complex socio-cultural construct, it’s not a biology construct. There’s no gene for being Asian.” Genetics play no part in your ethnicity? That’s absurd.
Is it racist to ask what does BAME stand for?
Death by virus
I cannot believe that someone is actually making this about race. No one is going around infecting ethnic minorities and we all have the same access to healthcare
Unable to synthesise enough Vitamin D from being kept indoors.
I read an early article about a study which considered citizens of countries that administered the BCG vaccination were less likely to suffer or succumb to the virus...?
1. Darker skin decreases vitamin D absorption, which mitigates the effects of the virus. 2. Lifestyle diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, obsesity and hypertension which amplify the effects of Covid are statistically more prevalent.
WHATTTT 📢
This is a very stupid bit of special pleading from the purveyors of identity politics that is utterly irrelevant
Because some have closer communities with more social interaction? Wouldn’t that explain it?
This article downplays genetics too much. There are relevant genetic differences for Asian/African people. Being fat and Japanese is more of a risk than being fat and European for example. Likewise, lactose intolerance is far less common with Europeans than with Africans. 1/2
