Parents have been asked to wear face masks when arriving for doctors appointments, as cases of whooping cough rise across the country. Doctors across the UK are asking patients to wear face masks to GP appointments, with surgeries issuing the warnings for ‘infection control purposes’.So far there have been 2,793 confirmed cases of whooping cough in the UK this year, including five infant deaths.
While West Hampstead Medical Centre, north west London emailed patients regarding the ‘local upsurge in measles and whooping cough’, the Telegraph reported.Patients who come to this practice with a cough must also wait outside until they are called in for their appointment. The UK Health Security Agency ’s data, which was published last week, read: ‘Sadly, in the first quarter of 2024 , there have been five infant deaths. Young infants are at highest risk of severe complications and death from whooping cough.’
This vaccine offers protection against whooping cough as well as polio, diphtheria and tetanus for when the baby is born. It is usually offered between 16 and 32 weeks of pregnancy.
