They may restart the docent programme at some point, but it would be paid black people being employed, not unpaid white people volunteering, according to the article. Reading it made me cringe.
Anybody who wants to can volunteer. There is nothing stopping young people (of any color) to volunteer. Maybe they’re just not interested!
It will be interesting to see if these fired docents were also donors and what impact that will have.
They fired the docents, which as a group were mainly white, wealthy women; citing a need for diversity. The docents are an asset to the museum. They couldn’t create a parallel program to recruit more diverse docents, perhaps using the existing to help craft this program? Big loss
Firing people on the basis of their colour … hmm . If only there was a word for that . Imagine if you could be hired for your capability rather than your skin colour
