The Metrolink system in Manchester is something that provides for large areas of the city, with trams running to the outskirts of the region as far as Rochdale, Altrincham and Ashton-under-Lyne.
And with schemes to deliver trams to these areas part of the Transport Delivery Plan 2021-26, we want to know if you think these boroughs should be priorities for a Metrolink extension.Despite the intentions of local leaders, there are currently no works in place for tram lines to the three proposed destinations. However, there is currently a feasibly study going into the Bolton line.
Another reader agreed, saying: " Bolton and Stockport do not need Metrolink. Almost all trains stop at both places."
Stockport
Hyde through to Glossop. Middleton.
Extend the alty line to knutsford or even Northwich please
Huddersfield!
Heywood. Not many options in Heywood.
Heywood !
AndyBurnhamGM front door.
Middleton
Guide Bridge station, as was originally planned.
Wembley. mancity second home
Knutsford?
From Eccles it shouldn't be to difficult to follow the old railway line up to Worsley, Monton and on to Bolton. The NW corner of Greater Manchester is woefully behind on public transport links.
Surrounding areas of greater Manchester like Bolton etc…
Bolton seems to have missed out entirely. Stockport to link with mainline station and bus terminus? Connect up the hospitals *and* run services early/late enough to transport those on early and late shifts
Royton
A tram station in Middleton would do wonders for the local economy and speed up the regeneration of Warwick Mill. MiddletonNeedsTheMet
Norfolk!!! Please x
Partington, via Timperley. And over the Cadishead Viaduct to serve Salford.
They can't manage the existing network, joke of a service. Maybe get that sorted first
The Ttafford Centre line should have continued over the new canal bridge to the AJ Bell stadium and then up the A57 to Irlam and Cadishead. One road access is so restricting especially if there is an accident that closes things
The moon.
Stockport please 🙏
I’d like it to be extended to middleton and better services to hospitals instead of having to get tram and bus
Stockport
Middleton. Been promised it for years.
Heywood/Middleton
Altrincham to stockport would be useful
Hale, Urmston..... Partington, Carrington
Bolton....
Bolton “fot do”.
Middleton
Bolton
Glossop
Extend the Trafford Centre line out to Urmston, Flixton, Carrington, Ashton-on-Mersey, Sale West, then round to join the Alty line at maybe Timperley.
Needs a new branch to Bolton via Salford/Swinton. 👍
Down Oxford road, connecting to Manchester royal infirmary
From Ashton through stalybridge, mossley to greenfield.
To my house.
Saddleworth and Huddersfield
Salford!
Stockport!
Eccles Worsley Walden Farnsworth Bolton.. There is actually a disused rail line that could be brought back

It should have gone to bolton as promised
Bolton, it’s one of a few who doesn’t have it
Extend from trafford centre to Urmston/Flixton.
New York city if they can get the rail to go across the Atlantic
Stockport
Bradford? Leeds? Wakey? Huddersfield?
Bolton, from Trinity street station
Greenfield or uppermill please!
Tram from Manchester to bolton
Ramsbottom. The traffic there is horrendous
Swinton, Clifton and Kearsley
Wigan and Bolton
All round Lancashire
Bolton
Swinton, the train service is terrible so would be good to get an alternative source of transport available
Oxford
Mossley, because there is no direct bus route to Manchester.
Middleton
Bolton
Stockport but they never will as they seem to think we are affluent enough…..
Denton, Greater Manchester, no trains to Manchester, 5 k away and takes over 1 hour to get to central manchester by bus
No where. Just needs to run on time and every time. There’s way too many issues currently.
Hebden Bridge
Bolton, Stockport, a link from Ashton to Rochdale via Oldham, or a circle line
Right next to IKEA and Ashton Cineworld that connects from Oldham Mumps
Bolton
Leigh. The largest town in GM without any form of rail transport. The busway already has the foundation for a great deal of the route.
My house
Down Oxford Road plse would improve access to cultural destinations like WhitworthArt victoriabaths OxRdMcr and much more
Nowhere it doesn’t make any till haha
Circle line joining the existing lines through the suburbs so people don’t have to travel through the city centre. And a line down Oxford Road through the universities to Withington to Northenden.
Rawtenstall.
Alwayss find it very surprising that a track doesn't run along Chapel Street, Salford. Would be an amazing way to connect it up for visitor and tourist flow in future.
Philadelphia for TheProdigalSean
Wilmslow / Handforth
Whilst not all being in Greater Manchester, Denton, Hyde and Glossop would alleviate lots of traffic, maybe Derbyshire could/should contribute. Obviously would need to not use existing single carriage ways
Stockport!
Middleton Heywood. Link Bury Heywood Rochdale
Serious responses. 1. From St Peter's Sq west along Peter St and Quay St to the new Factory, otherwise how will people get there easily. Indeed that's why so much room has been left there already. 2. From St Peter's Square south along Oxford Road to the University and beyond.
It needs to continue to Stockport from Didsbury and then link Stockport to the airport
Where’s that tram train we were promised in 2018 to Daisy Hill Bolton via Salford to Wigan? AndyBurnhamGM
Blackley, Higher Blackley
Why not take it down Oxford road? If there is enough demand to make it the busiest bus route in Europe then surely a rail based system would be viable and much more efficient.
Atherton and Leigh, Wigan Borough.
Tenerife
Benidorm
Wigan
London. But don’t let AvantiWestCoast run it.
Stockport
Circular joining up the towns/burbs roughly following the M60. Major town to join and full new route would link Bolton to Salford Central or Victoria via Moses Gate and chapel street. Government will never fund this.
Surley, Stockport-bredbury-romiley-marple, must be in the plans at some point.
London
Urmston
Irlam and Cadishead!
Barton Airport and beyond irlam & cadishead. 1 train and 2 busses that's it for both areas.
It needs to go up Oxford Road. Remove some of the 100s of buses 🚌
Urmston, goes all around it but not to it.
Please build a cricle line before any more extensions with a change at Cornbrook.
lake district
NOT on Railway routes or Roads !
Paris
Royton
Sheffield through the Woodhead. Cheshire - Handforth Wilmslow. Handforth Dean
Trafford Centre to Cadishead, much needed.
Enfield in North London would be ideal and very handy for Whit Friday Band Contests. Thank you 😁
Higher Blackley.
Hyde, but then link up all the different towns around the outskirts. Shouldn't have to go into the centre of Manchester to then go to Oldham. Should be a ring road tram line... 🤔
Fallow
Create a circular route: Bolton, Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, etc.
America
Middleton
Bolton
Metrolink should link all Greater Manchester Boroughs.💰will be saved as many people won't be driving. Mayor 🏆. Jobs, revenue & 'Bed for A Night' .
Middleton
Trams are slow, rather than extending the network further out it should be city areas to be connected first to reduce congestion - the Chapel Street/Blackfriars and Oxford Rd areas spring to mind
Stockport
Anywhere but Rawtenstall, leave the East Lancs Railway alone.
Stockport
Leeds
I try to avoid city centre in my car but it's s joke. Too many signs that don't make sense. Hard to find anywhere.
Should go in a circle around the m60
Every town in Greater Manchester that’s currently without it ! Called levelling up ! AndyBurnhamGM
Whalley Range?
Bolton
Urmston!
Liverpool please
Cambridge as I detest the M6 🤬
Middleton is the only answer
Should go out to Lymm this would significantly reduce traffic going into Manchester
Manchester to Middleton. All the way down Rochdale Road
Bolton
Bolton karlos68446
3am!!
Rochdale Road/Boggart Hole Clough please! 😁
Nowhere. They need to concentrate on making a robust, reliable and affordable service on the lines they already have.
Like this again! But instead of stopping in levenshulme go straight up into town! MCRMetrolink get it on the planner!
extend to Bolton maybe?
Worsley
A park and ride near J18 at Knutsford would be awesome
There are far too many transport options on this tiny island, it's madness! Don't extend
Liverpool via East lancs
Rochdale to Littleborough would be great
East lancs upto astley
Partington and Carrington
Gibraltar would be helpful!
Train extension from Rochdale to Castleton and Heywood. Trams from the city centre to Middleton
Little Hulton
Altrincham to Manchester Airport DIRECT
Blackley/Middleton rochdale Road down Victoria avenue
Stalybridge
Stockport Urmston/Flixton
carry on through from rochdale to bury could benefit bury.
Wilmslow
New York
Bolton
Bring it out to Bolton, need a better way to get into Manchester
Non. Needs to go underground now. Get someone to invest to fund ir
Marple
We needs Manc version of the Circle line on the tube. Connects all the main towns of the GM Boroughs without having to go into the city centre. That would be transformative.
Stockport town Center
Rawtenstall
London. We could do with a transport connection on rails to this city.
Bolton
Bring back the Marple to Didsbury route.
Bolton a must - eh misterknight ?
Everywhere, government collects taxes from everyone regardless of their location
Manchester Royal Infirmary. Definitely.
A new line that can operate as a second ring road that can connect all towns without the need to go through the city centre. It’s a sounds a big project but you revolutionise the whole city.
STOCKPORT! Now!!
It should connect lines where the are close but not through the city. IE Trafford Bar to Chorlton or Trafford centre and media city even Rochdale to Ashton.
Stockport as a new bus station is being built with room for trams
Knutsford. Not in Manchester, given. But this is knutsford don’t you know and we neeeeed it! Joking apart, one train of two carriages per hour is pants - please send the trams to us…
Stockport.
Urmston, even if that's with an on road metrolink bus service in the meantime
Stockport no question 👍
Mmetroviastan?
Stockport 💯
Middleton
It shouldn’t be, until they can actually run what they have properly and fix all the faults it should remain as it is!
Well Leigh would be good idea but they put a guided busway on the ideal route
Down the East Lancashire Road to Worsley 🚉
Oxford rd- didsbury
Bolton
Just keep it as it is. Trains and buses serve the areas talked about expansion and are much more cost effective than the extortionate tram fares 👍🏻
Links between the outer rim. E.g. oldham to Ashton, Rochdale to Bury without having to go through town
Stockport/Marple
Cheadle
Stockport
Macclesfield
