This is a perfect example of why the current system and incentives for GPs to move areas doesn't work. There needs to be a true borderless healthcare system - to better share NHS resources and end the postcode lottery of access to care.
Another reason why we should stop letting people in the country, all of our services are over stretched as it is.
Problem caused by GPs. Fundholding-money follows patient AFTER surgery rebuild, new car. Episode based stats. Require a 15 min appointment for each prob instead of one visit encompassing holistic. Qualifications equal intelligence NOT.
Notice how the most overworked GP’s are near the Kent coast. Wonder why ? 🤔
I allegedly live in one of the best area for GP access and cannot EVER get an appointment for either myself or children when needed , even getting repeat prescriptions for basic things are a battle . I called the other week every day for 6 days and could not get anywhere 😡
BBC_HaveYourSay Are these headcount or FTE positions? Quite an important distinction, there will remain key variation but may change the picture substantially...
I’m waiting for the simplistic chestnut “they’re so well paid they can go part time”. Name any other job that is so well paid people cut their hours instead of happily raking it in? I’ve talked to 30-40 GPs. All going part time “because I can’t go on working like this”.
The population is getting larger and older. Fewer illnesses are managed in hospitals. GP workload, responsibility and stress has been growing until nearly all GPs feel a 5 day week untenable and go part time. And retires ASAP. So we’ve run out of GPs.
This means absolutely nothing, most GP’s work part time anyway. Investigate this properly and look at the areas with huge numbers of chronic patients against GP, Practitioners and Nurses actual time available for patient appointments.
How many GPs work full time in their surgery? We have lots of named GPs in our surgery but not many work full time. Hard to get an appointment with your own named GP for consistent care.
What a weak, lazy piece of journalism Not included 20000 GP Locums Not factored in demographics, therefore demand. Surrey has more fit healthy workers compared to elderly south coast Not talked about the daft public. It’s a cold. Get over it. You don’t need to see a GP
GPs shortage caused by inflated salaries and early retirement.
I called up for an appointment every morning at 830 for 6 weeks. Every morning at I was told “there are no appointments, call again tomorrow” in the end the routine problem landed me in A&E 🤷♀️iow gp healthcare
I’d rather the NHS actually clamped down on FGM instead of this
Not good for retirees in Cornwall?
That's competition for you.
Most gp's are useless anyway. I've been waiting since Oct 2014 for a referal from my doc to have back therapy at my local hospital.
