Looking back to when Watford played Tottenham Hotspur in a friendly at Vicarage Road and German star Jurgen Klinsmann made his 'debut'.

Pre-season friendlies at Vicarage Road are not generally noted for attracting big crowds, let alone what would prove to be the highest attendance of a season before it had even started. But that was what happened on August 6, 1994 – and largely because of one player.

The opponents for Watford’s final summer friendly were Tottenham Hotspur and they had signed German star striker Jurgen Klinsmann from Monaco for £2 million. The World Cup winner was to make his first appearance in a Spurs shirt against the Hornets and thousands descended on Vicarage Road to get a first glimpse of him in action in England. With the Rookery End in the process of being redeveloped, the gates had to be closed as an official attendance of 14,021 crammed into the other three sides of the ground. That number was to be almost 6,000 more than Watford’s average league attendance of 8,125 for the 1994/95 campaign.
