The big debate over the past few days has been whether it’s safe to open schools to children other than those those of key workers or classed as vulnerable. However, this isn’t quite the right question to be asking. There will never be no risk. In a world where Covid-19 remains present in the community, it’s about how we reduce that risk, just as we do with other kinds of daily dangers, like driving and cycling. What we should be asking is whether schools are safe enough to open.

2/2 It would have been useful with regards to transmission by children, to test everybody 10 days after the return to school from the February half term, when a lot of families had gone skiing in Europe. How many parents, children and teachers were infected then? Did it expand?
devisridhar Glad I live in Ontario where the Premier, fordnation, put children first & said not worth the risk for 4 weeks of school. Focus on what’s needed for September re-opening including new framework for e-learning for kids who stay home. onpoli

devisridhar devisridhar this is excellent and very clearly reasoned. (I am married to a teacher.) I know you're busy but could you please, please help advise SG on their approach to dentistry next. Apparently arbitrary decisions at the moment.
devisridhar Excellent article
devisridhar Another great piece of guidance!
devisridhar It amazes me that people think that there is no God, but want Science to talk 🤪 Science 🧫 can’t tell us anything. It needs subjective human interpretation by scientists who as people are seldom without their own biases, prejudices or political affiliations.

Ya... Ontario Canada shuts schools until September because of COVID-19 pandemic. The province said in a news release that the decision was made after consultation with the chief medical officer of health and an assortment of medical experts.
devisridhar Interesting article in NY Times suggesting you can increase number of tests by swabbing five people and running all of them through one test. Could be useful for classes! Teachers starts day by swabbing all kids, gets results within 24hrs. If one positive, class quarantined.
devisridhar As they open to more pupils they are finding the older ones are less compliant with social distancing than the younger ones.
devisridhar Germany prioritised Year 13 pupils, in a very careful, controlled way not because they found social distancing easier but because they were doing their Abitur (A levels) this term. One of the schools closed after one day when a parent of one of the pupils was found to have CV
devisridhar Max class sizes of 15 for social distancing!? Come on.
devisridhar How do we find ‘safe enough’ ways for care home residents to spend time with their loved ones. Can’t see any signs people are even thinking about this. It’s nearly ten weeks since I have seen my mum.
devisridhar Great article Devi, Please come and join our Marchmont & Morningside YES independence group in Edinburgh. In Scotland we’d prefer to take advice on our societies health and well-being from credible scientific sources rather than be subject to some mad exceptionalism ideology.
Schools aren’t closed, there open for essential care workers. They should give the option for those kids who can’t study at home or are vulnerable. This would be all year groups with max class sizes of 15 for social distancing.

When the education minister of Wales decides in Wales. When the education minister of Scotland decides in Scotland. When the education minister of NI decides in NI. When um, Gavin Williamson, the education minister for England decides in England. Good luck.
(They mean England, again)
There’s incredible variety in schools’ architecture & profile both within the UK and internationally; each will need a detailed short & longer term plan with significant additional resources funded by the Government. If a winter epidemic is likely planning for that shd start now!
Scottish schools will reopen sometime after mid August at the earliest.
At this stage, the question ‘when’ schools should open is nowhere near useful. The question should be ‘how’ schools will reopen. On that question, the Govt has showed a gross failure to lead.
You give your conclusion before the argument thus allowing politicians to quote your excellent article out of context & in support of their policy.
Labour councils should not open for the remainder of this year! This will ensure that their future voting public will remain as thick as the present one!
