When is the next general election, who can vote and what are the rules

A snap general election has been announced by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak today and it will be going ahead just weeks from now.

How often are general elections held in the UK and who decides this? The latest a Parliament can be dissolved for a general election is on the fifth anniversary of its first inception. For our current Parliament, this date is December 17, 2024. How does the Prime Minster call a general election? The Prime Minster has to formally ask the King to "dissolve" Parliament, which is the official term for closing Parliament ahead of an election.

Who can vote in a general election? Anybody on the electoral register aged 18 or over can vote on polling day in the general election. Those over 18 also have to be either a British citizen, a qualifying Commonwealth citizen or a Republic of Ireland citizen with a UK address.
