V. V. good! Big pant-wearing, Chardonnay-swilling Bridget Jones is back next year in a fourth film, Mad About The Boy, based on author Helen Fielding's 2013 book of the same name.
The actors playing alongside Renée Zellweger, 55, are undeniably easy-on-the-eye. Leo Woodhall, of White Lotus and One Day fame, is 30-year-old Roxter, Bridget's toyboy, whom she connects with online. And yet, today, all that has changed – not only for Bridget but in the real world too. How do I know? Because, like her, I am a midlife woman who has dated across the decades.
Indeed, hold your scepticism, but the truth is I was deluged, and I mean deluged, by guys not just in their 30s, but in their 20s. All asking me for dates. Some were still at university! I was flattered, and if they were good-looking, I sometimes sent a few flirty messages back. But generally, I ignored them. What could we possibly offer each other beyond the obvious?
With the news Hugh Grant has signed up to the film, we can assume Mad About The Boy will see the return of Daniel Cleaver, Bridget's caddish, womanising former boss The 30-somethings were slightly different. Their motivation for dating older women seemed to me less Oedipal, as it were, and more to do with the fact women their own age are looking to settle down and have children. Deeply aware of their biological clock ticking, they are Bridget mark ones if you will.
Roxter, too, spirits Bridget away from leafy outer London and into the beating heart of the city, forcefully reminding her what it feels like to be young again. Yes, they take a night bus home rather than a Harley, but the youthful excitement is the same. Bridget Jones' main love interest for the first three books and films was the dashing and moral Mark Darcy, played by Colin FirthThe first difference here was that these guys were more subtle in their sexual approach compared to the younger men, whose messages were often eyebrow-raisingly explicit.
When it came to men in their 50s and 60s, we were back to the conventional 'younger woman, older man' stereotype and I'm afraid to say the quality of dates deteriorated to match.
