When I lost my husband to alcoholism, I also lost a part of myself

Kim and Chris Moore on their wedding day, July 3 1999 Kim Moore, 53, and her late husband Chris had what she calls a ‘whirlwind fairytale romance’. Though she is Canadian and he was a London-based risk analyst, the pair met through work in the late-Nineties when Chris flew out to their company’s Calgary office. ‘We were introduced in August 1997, then went out for dinner and spent more time together the next day,’ Kim recalls. ‘When he went back home, we corresponded through letters.

‘My first reaction tended to be lashing out in anger without realising’ This is why Kim is now championing the importance of self-care with her charity, Blossome. It helps people recover from the effects of losing a loved one to alcohol dependency or addiction by establishing an online and in-person community of people who engage in self-care activities. Kim believes learning how to take care of oneself and showing compassion amid grief helps break the generational cycle of substance abuse.
