'Women’s bodily autonomy is unfortunately not a new topic of conversation in the US. This felt different though, like I was watching the last inches of a safety net being ripped away from beneath me in real time.'

This is not to say the UK is perfect when it comes to reproductive health – the stigma surrounding abortions still very much exists, emotionally stunting women and preventing them from discussing their experiences openly or receiving support. We also face a severely underfunded NHS, meaning services around abortions and sexual health cannot necessarily offer an optimum level of care.

If the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling is overturned, it will translate into a very scary reality. State legislators will be able to determine their own abortion laws, with many states having already put “trigger laws” into place. This means new restrictive legislation is all ready to go, and will be implemented as soon as the ruling is overturned. Most of these trigger laws involve banning abortions all together, or severely restricting access to safe abortions.
