Roger Goodell will get booed savagely tonight at the 2023 NFLDraft Will the boos ever turn into cheers for the NFL commissioner? ✍️ ByTimGraham

Those who have worked with Goodell say he’s a persuasive personality. He’s known for a tireless work ethic, a loathing of complacency, a fascination with the next opportunity to conquer. Goodell much prefers improving a weakness to celebrating a triumph. He rides his staff hard.

“These television deals that have been signed and the labor peace he’s been able to achieve, you could say, ‘We’ve done a great job here. We just made $9 billion for our owners. We can relax for a second.’ The people who work for the NFL can’t relax for one second because they know their boss isn’t.”

Maybe progress was made not because Goodell was the catalyst, but because the world kept spinning, technology accelerated exponentially, medical advancements continued — all while political winds swirled in wild directions.Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith have been antagonists but have found greater labor peace than many professional leagues.

“He’s always behind the curve,” said Grenardo, a Rice University four-year letterman as a kick returner and defensive back. “The NFL always seems five or 10 steps behind, as opposed to the NBA, which is proactive and almost always seems on the right side of history.” One wonders what Goodell could accomplish over the next four years to avoid getting booed in Canton like he will be tonight.

Goodell supporters smirk at the concept he needs professional redemption. Everyone interviewed unanimously predicted Goodell will approach his final years as he did the first 17 — stubborn, obsessive and driven. They assure there will be no pivot.
