The question now facing Thailand as it reels from its deadliest mass shooting is what its notorious gun culture, at least by Asian standards, has to do with it 📝 YasmeenSerhan

argued that “the case reflects Thailand’s flawed gun control policy,” adding that in order to bring gun-related violence under control, easily-abused schemes such as the welfare gun program “must go.”An Ex-Cop Is Behind Thailand’s Deadliest Mass Shooting. Now, the Country Is Asking Questions

When it comes to Thailand’s gun control, these subsidized weapons represent “a huge loophole,” says Michael Picard, an independent researcher focusing on the intersection of the arms trade, corruption, and conflict, and who conducted field research in Thailand in 2019. Picard adds that Thai police officers often use these subsidized weapons in the line of duty rather than government-issued ones.

But as much as Thailand stands out among neighbors for its prevalence of guns, mass shootings of this kind are also indicative of a “globalization of gun culture,” says Paul Chambers, a lecturer at the Center of ASEAN Community Studies at Naresuan University in northern Thailand.

As both of Thailand’s recent mass shootings appear to show, that easy access can have devastating consequences. Whether this mass shooting will prompt reforms in the police and armed forces, or galvanize calls for greater gun control in society-at-large, remains to be seen. Gun violence hasn’t been a major political issue in Thailand, says Phil Robertson, the deputy director of the Asia Division at Human Rights Watch. “Perhaps this incident will serve as a wake up call that they need to develop strategies to prevent further tragedies like this in the future,” he says.

Devil possessed person can kill with a knife or a car too you know that right?

Same as America

What about the knives, should they be allowed?

They are not everywhere, stupid to claim that. Been lately?

No

More guns will help it.. ask america it’s working for them!!

Only dialectically.

lol

Why should it?

The left has screwed up world relations, Biden's release of oil reserves endangers national security, if there is a war, the United States will be very passive, the Democratic Party put partisan interests above national interests for elections, and should go to prison

Guns what about the knives? Knives are everywhere. I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more knives than guns.

First bring the change in your own country.

How about starting with the Meth problem first and then see if it's really a 'gun problem.'

Ummm... but an eyewitness said that while he used the gun to shoot the door and then kick it in, he used a knife to fatally slash and stab the children and adults inside. He did not shoot them.

Mass shootings in Thailand cause by government officer not civilian... drug, corruption are everywhere.

Well it hasn’t helped in the U.S. Maybe Thailand’s leaders can kick the gun lobby to the curb.

YasmeenSerhan This is more than a gun problem. It's a man problem.

YasmeenSerhan could it.. just possibly.. be a meth problem

YasmeenSerhan Did anyone read the dam article ? He used a knife NOT a gun !!!

YasmeenSerhan No time to mourn the dead, straight to an agenda. Unreal.

YasmeenSerhan Make sense…trying to push your woke agenda on the backs of dead children. Way to go.

YasmeenSerhan To wash the needless bloodshed that can only be described as the proliferation of the department stores JB hi-fi you can catch me on Facebook with the moniker 'Jun'. In regards to aka Wormwood behaving like an disease involved in the toxic culture of Co-op bookstores Merry Xmas!

YasmeenSerhan Unlike our republican nut cases, I'll bet the governing bodies in Thailand act quickly to avoid a repetition of this in the future.

YasmeenSerhan People cannot be trusted with guns.

YasmeenSerhan Thailand does not have a gun problem!!!

YasmeenSerhan The man slashed and stabbed people. It isn’t the gun!!!! Our world is full of evil.

YasmeenSerhan We are in the last 2 years of the tribulation. These kinds of horror will increase until the return of the Promised One comes.

YasmeenSerhan The whole world is experiencing delusion and distortion energies because all angelic help has been removed increasing more since 1989 and the adjudication of the Bright and Morning Star versus Lucifer.

YasmeenSerhan Another question is why men worldwide have to take women and children with them when they decide to kill their miserable selves.

YasmeenSerhan It’s always the guns. Strict gun control saves lives. These babies deserved better. itstheguns

YasmeenSerhan Leave it to be the first to politicize the horrific event.

YasmeenSerhan that's terrible.

YasmeenSerhan Nothing

YasmeenSerhan 10 millions guns in a country of 70 million people.

YasmeenSerhan Nothing to do with. Thailand's recent mass shooters were a soldier an an ex-cop. They'd have guns even if the general public couldn't.

YasmeenSerhan Killing sleeping babies. Such a coward.

YasmeenSerhan Stop politicizing as gun culture. The shooter was an ex policeman.

YasmeenSerhan 'If only those kids had guns to fire back,' says NRA spokesperson. NRA

YasmeenSerhan The liberal media immediately connects it to guns. Shocking.

YasmeenSerhan he had a knife too fuck sticks

YasmeenSerhan It's not a gun problem, its a people problem. Stop demonizing guns and start holding the disturbed human behind the gun responsible.

YasmeenSerhan The real issue isn't guns, but mental health. It's directly linked to population size. In smaller racially homogeneous populations tribalism is more fully expressed. You care about your neighbors. You recognize the value of every life within the system. Stop breeding so much.

YasmeenSerhan Are they going to blame the gun too

YasmeenSerhan I’d say number one task would be careful assessment of all would be Police Officers. We have “gun control” in Australia & Middle Eastern Gangs still have daylight shootouts in the Streets of Sydney.illegal guns are the same as illegal drugs. You want em you can get em obviously.

YasmeenSerhan I'd be more concer ed that it was an ex cop

YasmeenSerhan Man, remember when you guys said we need to be more like Europe with guns? Turns out almost every country in Europe has a higher firearm ownership rate than Thailand. Stop lying to people.

YasmeenSerhan This is a thinly veiled shot at US gun culture in order to gain clicks & attention.

YasmeenSerhan I would have to say that guns and drugs are a problem if he was fired for having possession of Meth he was in love enforcement he should have been monitored for these symptoms let this be a lesson to all

YasmeenSerhan you guys are pathetic human beings!! just sickening!!

YasmeenSerhan Guy is a Police officer who used his Pistol and a Knife to stab and shoot them. Why are you guys faking News on this? Reported

YasmeenSerhan Guns are not the problem. Blaming guns is Exactly like blaming Spoons for being fat! Knock this shit off. The Cause Is the Mottive and Idiology this man followed. Something happened to him to make him choose this path. Society must search for that cause and intervine.

YasmeenSerhan FFS...leave it to Time magazine to pivot to this nonsense less than 24 hrs after this horrific tragedy. Shameful American politics doesn't play the same in SE Asia.

YasmeenSerhan Shits so sad man. Wtf

YasmeenSerhan Did not know guns were commonplace in Thailand!

YasmeenSerhan Similar thing happened at an elementary school in Russia. Even though Russia gun laws are strict. When will Liberals realize it has nothing to do with what weapon is used and everything to do with psychosocial problems. Regardless it breaks my heart. BidenIsADisgrace

YasmeenSerhan Why does the BBC report it was mostly a knife attack? Are they the FakeNews? Or are you?

YasmeenSerhan They need more gun laws! Just because guns are banned, more should be done!

YasmeenSerhan Annnnnnd they are blaming the gun already.

YasmeenSerhan Thailand needs gun control!!! The NRA and MAGA are to blame!! Take all weapons from civilians now!!! . . . No wait!!!, you already did

YasmeenSerhan Oh my God!

YasmeenSerhan So 😢

YasmeenSerhan I just wonder how many people on this commentary who are shocked by this senseless act are in turn supporting the US/NATO proxy war against Russia, arming neos in UKR and pushing up to nuclear confrontation? You abhor violence in one breath; in the other you champion it.

YasmeenSerhan what makes it even worse is that children are victims

YasmeenSerhan When you look at stats on mass killings, it is common that the shooter has a military or police background. Violence begets violence; causes sickness in our societies. Deeper look beyond just 'gun culture' knee-jerking. Something is terribly wrong with our promotion of violence.

YasmeenSerhan ⚘️🙏🏽

YasmeenSerhan To have killed his wife and child too denotes something way beyond 'gun culture.'

YasmeenSerhan We absolutely know where these people are getting the idea to go into Schools and kill children. That idea comes from the United States…the gun happy country.

YasmeenSerhan But but CNN told me this only happens in the US You mean other countries al;so have mass killing events sometimes involving children? No thats clearly russian propaganda.

YasmeenSerhan WTH is wrong with people I get that people have mental health problems and are overstressed What I don't get is why people like this are constantly attacking children and murdering babies. My heart goes out to the families in Thailand

YasmeenSerhan Wow he was an ex police officer....this is so incredibly sad...my heart goes out to all the Mama's who lost their babies 😢

YasmeenSerhan Crazy how nobody says shit about God when things like this happens. Like was God just drinking tea or something. Just an evil unstoppable man with a gun. But when something good happens oh thank God, not the good people.

YasmeenSerhan Terrible news 😔🙏🏻

YasmeenSerhan Taken a page out the ol recent us history book

YasmeenSerhan Move to Texas; they love guns down there.

YasmeenSerhan 🙏

YasmeenSerhan Thailand is probably the one asian country ppl can privately own gun as far as I know. I am not even aware of this fact. It's important for them in case China comes to invade! Mass shooting? It has sth with culture not gun.

YasmeenSerhan Nothing. The gun is irrelevant.

YasmeenSerhan That's right, Time. Dance on those dead bodies to get your political message across. Dance!

YasmeenSerhan Only Military & Police should have them, right? A former policeman today, the last bad one there 2 years ago was a soldier...

YasmeenSerhan Considering they have very strict firearms ownership laws, maybe THOSE criminals don't obey LAWS, either.

YasmeenSerhan Geez. Yet, again...NOT a gun problem!!! A crazy person problem.

YasmeenSerhan In Thailand it's illegal for people to own guns. It's the same in Singapore. Anyone who wants a gun would have to do so on the black market.

YasmeenSerhan no gun culture to blame, just one crazy mo fo

YasmeenSerhan 'Notorious gun culture'. Hmm -- doesn't sound like any other country I know of. 🤨

YasmeenSerhan Guns are never the problem. People are. It’s interesting that no matter where a gun killing occurs the media always frame it in a way that guns are to blame and that guns have to be removed from people. Until the authorities give up their guns though, this can’t happen.

YasmeenSerhan Has Time reported on Thailand's 'notorious gun culture' before today? Reports from sources around the world say that most of the victims were stabbed to death. Who is correct? Does Thailand have a 'notorious knife culture' also?
