What Notre-Dame means to the French

No other site represents France quite like Notre-Dame.

It has given its name to one of the country's literary masterpieces. Victor Hugo's novel Hunchback of Notre-Dame is known to the French simply as Notre Dame de Paris. It is impossible to overstate how shocking it is to watch such an enduring embodiment of our country burn. There are many of those. The cathedral is not just the most popular tourist site in Western Europe. Eight centuries after its completion, it is also still a place of worship - about 2,000 services are held there every year.

Heard the place was in a state of disrepair for years and the French Govt wouldn't put the funds in place for the repairs? Why didn't the Church stump up some of the money?. Seems to me the fire is a gift from god to those at the top who didn't want to pay. Now others step in

it's very upsetting. Such a beautiful building. A wonderful tourist attraction for everyone to see. But it belongs to France, it's in France so they should pay for it's restoration.

It could be worse. What if it had been the local shopping mall? 🙄 If such buildings mean so much, why are they not better protected? It's not as if the RC Church can't afford the insurance!

As well as reporting that the Rich & Famous will be donating to the Notre Dame fund will you also report contributions from other faiths particularly the French Muslim community I’m sure they will respond, perhaps showing this solidarity would retrieve some good from this tragedy

Looks like the church was built over A PAGAN TEMPLE.

It’s like how Indians will feel if anything happens to the Taj Mahal. But the feeling is much deeper in this case because it is a place of worship. Very sad indeed for all of us.
