Today’s Tory and Labour politicians lack the will of their predecessors to reach out to others across the social divide

Britain faces a crisis of political leadership. Neither the right nor the left of politics is capable of throwing up a figure who can bind their respective coalitions together and sustain parliamentary majorities best to navigate Brexit or Remain and their aftermath.

and one of the biggest economies, and an amazing place to live.

Easy, boarding schools and their stiff upper lip mentality and attitude. Most of these leaders have the same background and those who are a little bit different are 'socialist'.So in need of new leaders.Where are they?Still too young and probably having the same elitists education

It's about the fact that people are taught no real critical thinking skills which leaves them beholden to the not impartial press. Newspapers and television are strong opinion makers. Hence garbage in garbage out. Simple

acgrayling Class and FPTP.

you could start with eton, no?

Add dumbing down of the media and education, the inability to engage in reasoned debate (mostly replaced by hurling insults) and the widespread view that politics is boring which combine to allow those with ambition & a gift for hyperbole to reach undeserved heights.

yep...failed Labour leaders!

Privilege, the old school tie, boys club,it doesn't work?So why keep going down the same old road, and expect something different?

What is it about public schools being full of an inbred minority of a minority that first made them useless as Prime Ministers?

If you promise the impossible to people deluded enough to believe it’s their destiny, then the result is seventy years of failed leadership.

acgrayling I can't imagine why, perhaps it's the selection process ?

acgrayling It a consequence of the antiquated Victorian electoral system

The left

Excellent piece.

Eton. Shortest article ever.

Margaret Thatcher crushed the Etonites and they never recovered. They are still hiding under her petticoat.what with the current Yelsin like buffoonery all pervading in the Tory party?!

It’s maybe the British psyche rather than these individuals. Brits have a vision of themselves as world dominators and these people presented themselves as being able to restore us to the pedestal. You can only work with the raw materials you’ve got. It’s all just a delusion.

In a more and more populist environment, Leaders (business and politics) no longer risk long term unpopular (necessary) reforms or decisions. They reflect the population, prevail shortterm popularity, individualism and comfort. No surprise. lessisbetter

Arrogance of believing you only need to have gone to Eton to be qualified?

Leadership requires a very good sense of reality. Pompous self imagery spewing out of elite schools simply cannot qualify. Britain must end it's caste system if it is to progress

The public school system. It pumps out narcissists who think they're amazingly talented, but nobody else does.

Public school arrogance (and ignorance)?

The class system and right wing media moguls.

Historically, the British have produced great soldiers but poor commanders.

Winston Churchill - Margret Thatcher - Boris Johnstone I think not

Eton ? PPE degrees ?

Arrogance and a massively over inflated sense of your place in the world.

The archaic class system

Public schools.

An obsession with people from Eton and Harrow and other boy farms

It isn't Britain. It is the marshall aid plan.

The notion that inherited privilege is the principal qualification for leadership?

Far-right Britain First leader pelted with stones while abusing migrantsPaul Golding, leader of Britain First, went to Calais, France, to tell migrants not to cross the English Channel More garbage from this leftist rag, all it’s fit for is bog paper for sure. I’m not entirely sure he was ‘abusing them’ He was certainly saying things that they didn’t want to hear. I suppose bricking someone when they say something you don’t like is a reasonable response ? The same migrants that abuse and throw stones at innocent British lorry drivers
