When we first met in St Thomas's Hospital in the middle of January, Craig looked in a bad way

MP Craig Mackinlay acknowledging applause and cheering at the start of the weekly session of Prime Minister’s Questions MPs stood to applaud as the Conservative MP for South Thanet raised his metal arms triumphantly, standing on his prosthetic legs, in his trainers. It was a very un-parliamentary recognition of the triumph of the human willWestminster is often thought to be dreadful at keeping secrets. Yet Mackinlay’s medical condition was kept under wraps.

So I started to text him. I offered to come to see him in early January “for a gossip and a chat”. He agreed and replied, with some understatement: “It is fair to say that I have had a torrid time.” When we spoke to Craig and his wife Kati, he had his NHS prosthetic legs and arms fitted. On Monday this week he took on his new, privately made silver prosthetic hands and forearms ahead of his return to Parliament.

When he entered the Chamber, he looked around at the public gallery, picking out Kati and their five-year-old daughter Olivia, and then to some of the NHS staff who treated him.
