Calls to reform the system are growing amid anger over rising fares and poor punctuality.

And despite growing passenger anger, fares will rise next year, rather than the lower Consumer Prices Index.

At the time, the government hoped that those private firms would compete on most routes through a system known as"open access". Rather than bidding for entire lines, services themselves were on offer. But that left the taxpayer to pick up the tab for all loss-making services. When the network was publicly-owned, these would have been subsidised by the profitable ones.

"The reality is though, there isn't a lot of competition on the railway - apart from the franchising system itself."

It’s based on greed

One word 'Greed' renationalise rail, the EU won't be able to complain, and we won't have watch all the under the table help EU grants to France to modernize and upgrade their railroads support French farming and support/buy under performing car brands

I do not support Corbyn and his Momentum Buddies, but one thing I agree on is, that Trains, Electric, Gas, Water companies should be Government run, not for profit, if they make a profit the people should benefit, not some shareholder.

Greed

Fat cats

Everything. nationalisetherailways

Simple - 1) All private companies care about is profit; customer service is of no interest to them. 2) A struggling region cannot be propped up by a successful region, when those regions are owned by different private companies.

Mission impossible no dough

Weak government

Privatisation. The moment that profit is entered into the equation, that becomes the sole purpose of the enterprise, to the detriment of everything else. The whole rail network should be run as a not-for-profit operation.

Everything

Business acooping up all the profits and government subsidies to put in their own pockets and ignoring reinvestment in the railways

Too much government involvement and general incompetence

£2.35 for a coke

You can't have competition on a single railway line

Share dividends and high salaries subsidised by the tax payer.

nana just when one leaves the kids alone in a kitchen full of baking ingredients then💥 the past governments mainly due to brexit have aloud the Franchisors off the hook but looks like current outfit on there case again🤷‍♂️ The rail report recommendations must be implemented asap.

Crap idea, that has taken slightly longer than Brexit, to realise is a crap idea

Profit and share holder returns before service and investment

Greed!

One word. 'Profit'.

When people say 'british rail were terrible', I roll my eyes.. it was deliberately run to the ground by the government so they had an excuse to sell it and privatise, this happens in other industries. The ECML was profitable when it was nationalised a few years ago now look at it

greedy b*sterds

Running public services for profit rather than efficient, reliable and effective delivery accessible to all leads only one way. Failure......

I remember the old joke that a fire at Birmingham Station the fire brigade were beaten to the station by the PR people of all the companies so they could deny it was their fault. That is the problem to many head offices.

Profit over service

££££££££____🚅🚅🚅🚅🚅

Did anything ever go right?

Greed. Simple really.

Rail franchising

It doesn’t help that the franchises are majority owned by overseas businesses and rail companies. The cash is siphoned off, sent abroad & never seen again or invested back into the network. Hence the reason we have to try & recoup the losses by paying through the nose for tickets

Just outsource it to Amtrak. Job done.

Everything.

Owners are taking all the profits.

Franchising. Private companies trying to outbid one another to win a service - prices go up and investment in the service falls. Also creates monopolies on routes, so regardless of cost or whether they can stick to their timetable the passenger has no choice but to use

Government.

You can ask the same question about water companies. When there is no effective competition, it leaves the door open to corruption and greed. Just look at Southern Water fined £126m for lying about their performance.

The government allow them to make 3% which is normal. when they have the 3% they won’t spend a penny more. When signal failure etc happen they only make decisions for cost and not customers

Franchising

Greed

I don’t think privatisation works...

Shareholders. Put it back in our hands and let it be run as a public service and not as a private cash generator.

You know, but you will not report it. Stop fishing for scandal and wasting my money!

CEOs and dividens to shareholders With the Government only seeing the policy as an effective stealth tax on commuters to improve it's own finaces. Cure these flaws in the current system you'd end up with a better rail network.

The word franchising. It should never hae been done. The oversight has been appalling and ineffective.

It’s easy what went wrong. Private business has been creaming off profits for years and not reinvesting as they should. Simply put, privatisation only makes fat cats fatter, I should know, I’m a cat (obvs)

Same thing as always greed and more greed

Look at the railways in China. They are all high-speed trains with speeds of over 250 kilometers per hour.

Greed.

Because it never worked in the first place. The East coast failed 3 times yet nationalised it works fine.

Franchises make 9.4bn profit a yr. In 1994 the cost of running entire network was 1.68bn in 'today's money' Franchises are making 6 (SIX) times more in profit than it cost to run entire service including upgrading & maintaining infrastructure

Fatcats, ripping people off .sevice u/s

Greedy companies and big lack of customer service.

Think its easier to ask what has gone well with this.

Greed at the top. Same old problem.

It’s pretty bloody obvious. You make paying shareholders the priority and customers get shafted. Rail should be Nationalised and run as non profit asap. Better for passengers fares and better for the environment if we have public transport that is affordable.

Maybe, like Brexit, it was simply a shit idea 🤷‍♂️

What's gone right with it?

What’s wrong !! The same thing as every other business it’s called greed they don’t give a toss for their customers or workers all any business gives a shit about is money !! Pure and simple.

greed its simple as that to many bosses not enough workers

Not possible to set a set of non confliction performance measures for a public service.

The clue is in the title of the article

Disappointed learn VirginTrains lost NW Coast franchise. How does PaulMaynardUK Railways Minister view this b/c it's his route Blackpool to London. He'll have a lot to live up to & the flak, if new franchise doesn't deliver b/c Northern Rail under his watch trashed passengers.

privatisation was the stupidest thing that could have been done with the railways

Everything

Greed

it's that a service has been placed into private hands, thus ensuring that the only concern is profit

'Answers on a postcard'

Being sold off in the first place
