The lack of personal protective equipment has become one of the defining stories of the UK's battle with coronavirus.
It had a stockpile of kit housed at a giant temperature-controlled warehouse in the north-west of England. There were millions of pieces of equipment, which have proved invaluable in the first few months of the pandemic.Nonetheless, frontline staff have found themselves in a position where they have not always had the kit they need.
Last week the UK received a shipment that was meant to contain 200,000 gowns, but in the end only 20,000 arrived. Hospitals go through 150,000 a day, so it was of limited value. But even where there has been equipment available, the basic distribution networks have struggled. It has been a similar story in the community. GPs, the police, councils, and - most critically - care services, also need protective kit.
The issue for community services has been further complicated by a change in guidance before Easter, which meant the amount of protective kit recommended for use in the community increased, leading to some pretty serious shortages.
At this point, I think it wise to add that I've yet to see evidence of adequate preparation for any future intergalactic intervention by an as yet, unknown, unidentified unprecedented world wide alien invasion. Bloody Tories 😤
Nothing judging by all the tik tok videos I’ve seen they all look well equipped
No logistical sense.
its Fearmongering they will not tell the truth Every country has a shortage of PPE 😡
The peo Le who did not respond to offers to make equipment should be named
Unrealistic expectations and a media frenzy. Thats whats gone wrong - these are total war like conditions.
Nothing, as usual BBC trying to make itself relevant.
PPE? I'd love some! I work in a place with next to no social distancing or so called PPE not to mention on minimum wage but I'm classed as a key worker. We just get on with it.
Do you not watch the daily briefing? They've explained this a million times please find something else to moan about
can't expect drs with 18 yrs of schooling know how to order .....
They being used by attention seeking health professionals for dance videos on tik toc
Really No just a cheap political point
Nothing new to harp on about today now it's arrived & delivered?
The media, that’s what’s gone wrong!
Same thing that went wrong with this!!
Don't you listen to the briefings?
Just imagine how much disposable ppe a member of nhs staff uses in a day, then multiply it by close to a million, that is the magnitude, then private care homes then add in a global pandemic
Nothing if you listen to what the professionals are saying, rather than Labour activists and unverified sources. Earlier we heard that this is the greatest logistical challenge an army general has faced in 40 years of service. But we are succeeding during a global crisis.
What's gone wrong? Conservative governments insisting the UK doesn't need manufacturing industry or any ability to make anything practical. The UK will be ever more prosperous by virtue of its invisible earnings. That's what's gone wrong
Hold on. This is now, almost certainly, the most dangerous Country on the Planet to live in and you focus purely on the PPE? What's happened generally? Government guidelines ? NHS hardware and staffing levels? Underfunding? Let's inform.
A GLOBAL pandemic might have an impact on supplies
The government have failed to deliver because they were to too early to respond to this pandemic
Doesn't bloody stop nhs staff going on tiktok in their ppe and using their valuable time to have a synchronised dancing lesson and good laugh. Do their jobs and stop fookin moaning.
Out of date, haven’t turned up, and complete and utter bullshit lies by the Silver spoon fed mob in power, and before you say it all politicians are half human, scum the lot of them.
Maybe you should look to China, who were very quietly buying up the entire world's PPE supply without telling anyone they had a spreading virus in their country.
Nothing... if you’re happy for nurses and carers to go to treat your elderly relatives without PPE. It’s still happening now. The government, procurement departments, and private care providers have all failed health care workers and thousands of patients
'What's gone wrong?'... Very simple They knew there was a problem in 2016, 'Exercise Cygnus' They did nothing to prepare Complete and Utter negligence... 'Fact'
It's the ScareMongering the BBC are not on our side. They are against us. It's a war against this killing murdering virus and the bbc are against us in my opinion, if they are we need to stop the TV licence fee
Suggest initially reserves were based on a model. Further modelled a few years ago austerity stopped active preparation when clear not able to cope so hoped would not happen. Even a documentary on Prime was a warning ignored. Governments only plan short term.
A billion pieces delivered to 58,000. It's not for the want if trying. But that's not good enough for the BBC. ditchthelicsencefee
Nothing except lies from far left activists who happen to be nurses...
MattHancock
Selfishness
Nothing
In a century’s time the human race (if it still exists) will mock us and say ‘how could they possibly have believed a plastic apron could’ve protected them against an invisible virus’.
Has any hospital actually ran out? Or are we in a constant, we will possibly run out on a few days, round of news stories?
PUTTING A BUNCH OF DERANGED BREXIT CULTISTS IN CHARGE OF A COUNTRY is what's gone wrong with PPE.
Journalist please stay at home and watch Government briefings without asking anymore silly questions Save public from becoming mentally ill
It’s a world Wide Pandemic so much he whole world needs PPE obviously!
BBC Reporting. Article ends
Nothing. Just labour activists telling Porkie Pies.
tories f*cked it
What's gone wrong? A surge in demand due to a pandemic that has affected everyone. Pretty simple, even for you lot.
