'Intervention by the UK Government, therefore, isn’t controversial; it’s critical. The rights of women and pregnant people must prevail. The time to act is now.'

In March last year, Westminster saw a rare moment of unity as MPs voted overwhelmingly to right a historic wrong.that would allow women to access abortion care in Northern Ireland.

This comes after two Health and Social Care Trusts were forced to temporarily suspend their abortion services, with dire consequences. During the three-month period one of the clinics shut, it is estimated by Informing Choices NI that almost 100 women were denied an abortion, with other hospitals too stretched to accommodate them.

In April 2020, before the first abortion clinics opened in Northern Ireland, two women tried to take their own lives – they had been unable to travel and were distraught at the prospect of continuing with unintended pregnancies. Their lives were saved, but we cannot risk a repeat of this situation. Surgical abortions are significantly more expensive and currently Trusts simply do not have the money to meet their legal requirements.

Northern Ireland: DUP vows to 'vigorously oppose' UK government on abortion servicesNI Secretary Brandon Lewis has been accused of 'over-reaching' over plans to force Stormont to speed up abortion services. To destroy a perfectly healthy and defect free fetus is one of the most wicked acts one human can wreak upon another, but I understand and accept that many others feel very differently. Somebody really should tell the DUP it’s not the 15th century anymore. Look at these tolerant respectful of other people beliefs leftists in the comments smh. If they don't wanna murder babies, they don't have too.
