Millions of Britons could benefit from weight-loss jabs, but only if they change their lifestyle as well, doctors warn Weight-loss jabs are not a silver bullet for reducing cardiovascular disease but should be used to give patients a “kick-start” towards a healthier lifestyle, one of the UK’s leading obesity experts has said.
However, Dr McCullough suggested that patients who take semaglutide without making lifestyle changes may never see the full benefits from the treatment. Semaglutide is approved for use on the NHS as Wegovy for obesity and Ozempic for diabetes. It is prescribed for up to a maximum of two years. Dr McCullough said experts need to look at long-term outcome data to see the effects of the continued use of semaglutide.
Dr Jay Verma, a London-based GP and president of the General Practice section at the Royal Society of Medicine, agreed that “So the answer cannot be to give another job to primary care without proper staffing and funding to deliver it. To properly manage our diabetes patients, I ended up developing a new piece of software, SmartSearches, or we could have become lost in the number of checks, tests and reviews required for each patient.
