A letter from an ancestor who worked as a nurse in Sydney during the Spanish flu reaffirms what we know about societal responsibility and protecting others

I was in hotel quarantine when I discovered a letter written in 1919 by my great-aunt Jean about her work as a voluntary aide during Australia’s Spanish flu outbreak.

Lucky Australia didn’t have at that time (1919) PM like Czech AndrejBabis and medical professionals as trumpian-denying/macho in covid assesment & approach as vlvalek (& many othets). Reasonable carefulness & care, not the rule of loud minority opposing masks.

This letter could quite literally have been written the other day

Highlights how poorly prepared societies were for a pandemic despite the knowledge. Free enterprise is really bad at planning and mitigation, there is no money to be made in it. Hope life priorities are clearer by 2120.
