The collapse of the airline should prompt the government to confront Britain’s creaking transport network, says transport writer Christian Wolmar

Flybe’s collapse is a real test of the government’s promise to help “left behind” communities. For regional communities in the UK, Flybe was a lifeline: the airline was the only carrier chartered to and from Anglesey, off the north west coast of Wales, and operated 80% of the flights from Belfast’s City airport.

Roads/Climate - might Scottish Government consider suspending the current dualling of the A9 between Perth/Inverness and instead dual the railway.

And possibly energy efficient and not polluting diesel trains! It's ridiculous that in 2020 you still have some!

We do until we get that radical plan if ever it comes. Edinburgh to Norwich, Newquay by train or bus, 9hrs plus. Airplane = 1hr. Do all your commentors just live in the London area by any chance?

Currently drive up to 2k miles pm for business. Would love to use a train but at double the journey time and cost, in practical terms, I cannot make life work by train. UK needs a public infrastructure upgrade ASAP. Plenty more like me

And we don’t need HS2. Just a bloody waste of money
