UK key workers are clapped and cheered each week, but what are they paid?

The ONS estimates that the hourly pay for a care worker, cashier or shelf stacker is under £9 - which is more or less in line with the minimum wage . But that falls short of what the Living Wage Foundation charity calculates is necessary to meet basic needs. It recommends £9.30 - or £10.75 in London. The government plays a large role in the pay of individuals working in the public sector - that's anyone whose job is directly funded by taxes.

The government does not directly set their wages, but they can lower taxes, provide benefits and increase the minimum wage. The government has made no direct pledge on key worker pay during the coronavirus crisis. Other pay boards have not given their recommendations for 2020-21 yet, but recent decisions on public sector pay include:Teachers were given up to a 3.5% increase in pay in 2018-19 school year and 2.75% in 2019-20

UK key workers don't play fn, if they played fn they'd get more money from their placement earnings duuuuuuuuuuuh

The truth is no keyworker, dust men, retail workers and cleaners are not paid enough. This country/government does not truly value hard working people. If your career is not classed as professional then you do not get the recognition/pay you should.

sidcelery Yes . Payroll staff make it happen no matter what. Not where you were aiming but it takes lots of cogs for the wheel to go round.

Well, they cam earn £500-£800 just for working one day on a 'Bank shift'. Of course they're against privatisation on the outside, but on the inside they're grabbing ridiculous money.

Why not make St George's day a national holiday in rememberance of the people who has passed w inith corona.virus and show thanks to NHS welldone please see if anything can done take care

Really need to look at revision of who gets paid what. What use are big corporate CEOs with their multi million salaries when crunch time comes?

Tory voters shouldn’t stand on the doorstep and clap and richardbranson should be ashamed of himself! StaySafeStayHome

Nurses , firemen , military, hgv drivers to name but a few. All paid peanuts . Yet without them , where would we be. High time these governments , corporate fat cats stopped lining their own pockets and pay the people who keep the companies afloat what they're actually worth

Well thanks.

increasekeyworkerspay

Jack, and will soon be deported. When Little Britain mentality sweeps the nation again

Our last pay rise was 6.5%....over 3 yrs 🤔 MPs gave themselves 11% in 1 YEAR if my memory serves me well

They do the job they are paid for. If they want more then work elsewhere. Ridiculous to question salaries for a job you do not work in.

Not just nhs staff but pay rise for support workers . Carers . People who are on the front line who dont get the credit they all deserve

I am one of those unskilled key workers. I work in retail. I would say my pay is fair for the level of qualification I don’t have or need for it. I think it’s a little silly to put a table up of key workers with a median for households like it’s an even playing field.

peanuts!

Loads of civil servants, including those from HMRC organising this furlough scheme, are key workers earning lots less.

Maybe give us a discount on the TV license. That could help. Especially as I don’t watch any of your shitty shows.

Christ only about 4 weeks late to ask the question 🙄

Bit harsh

And what price are they paying for government Covid19 failures?

Why compare jobs? Who cares what bus driver get compared to train drivers. Or nurses or shop workers. Nurses should be more of course but why should others be paid less? I'm a bus driver and our wages are a 30% of a train driver but I dont begrudge them that. Silly

The very same government that stand and clap every Thursday are the same government that voted against giving nurses a pay raise!! But give themselves a pay rise whenever they feel like i!!!

Not enough.

Clapping is a pointless exercise that just eases individual conscience. If they believe in what they are doing they would make a financial contribution. This would help nurses but more importantly it would show that the British public is prepared to pay more tax.

Never enough under the Tories whilst they cheer them not getting a pay rise.

Student nurses are payed nothing they have to pay to train and are left with dents over £50,000

Key workers formally known as low skilled labour, will there be a review of peoples value and worth after this of course not morals are to expensive, their appreciation by the general public has never been in doubt.also their pay has and unfortunately never will reflect that.

Earning less than those 50% on furlough and definitely earning 100% less than those that can work from home !

Sad thing is,when this is all over, they will face even worse austerity and pay freezes whilst the conditions for businesses to get back on there feet will amazing.Yet when fully recovered, businesses will budget around these “amazing” benefits, rely on them, and it will remain!

People are dying and we cheer

oh they're 'clapped' alright. the govt claps them everyday.

Yeah what is the average pay for nurses over there ?

I’m paid 8.70 which is less then I did before this virus

The same as most people , not enough.

Too little

Exactly!!

UK key workers not paid enough because the most disgusting and greedy people like the Beckhams and Richard Branson are balantly coveting taxpayers'money to fund their lifestyle. That is what makes it more the sadder.

These people are on the front line everyday. Yet, they wouldnt be able to afford a home to buy.

They are wasting PPE in your photo though.... just saying

Well i can tell you that a key worker like myself who works in tesco is still only on my normal hourly pay 😥 is that fair too?

Tories: putting the n in cuts

My husband is an NHS frontline hospital doctor. His new rota means double the amount of weekends&nights in a 10 week period. No extra pay being offered by the Trust he works at, so he and other docs essentially working for free. It is an absolute disgrace.

We would all have a much better idea of what they are paid if broadcasters like BBC covered these issues more regularly and with the same priority as they give to stories about Westminster, America, Royalty and the like.

aodhanmate lovie971

Most porters and other key hospital workers are not employed by the NHS but by private contractor ISIS friend of mine is on just over £10 an hour, he’s a senior porter, but how much do ISIS get per hour for his services, it’s a lot lot more than £10 an hour.

That sound good

They arent all clapped. I follow some peng ones

Never enough now or at any point in the year

Paid with self esteem!

3/3: This leaves behind all those who the nation doesn’t really give a shit about because a supermarket uniform doesn’t draw the same emotions as a blue nurses outfit. And so the rich/poor divide continues....

2/3: Public support will easily be behind popular NHS/Public Sector staff (who are way more protected than the guys supplying your daily essential needs) so they’ll easily gain the extra financial boost being recommended.

1/3: The report is highly unfair as it doesn’t really account for huge numbers of key workers who are not Full Time, probably on Zero hour contracts, and are hard to compare to their Full Time equivalents.

jadeadam_38 They are not getting paid near enough! That's what

Not good enough on the ball then Gaz

Not enough

Absolute bollox 30k depends on what Banding they are on. Cant see if this is stated. Pretty sure its deffo not 30k. Its a lot less.

But not provided enough PPEs

A cleaner/caretaker in Private Housing Association 30p above minimum wage. No overtime/extra if you work a bank/public holiday. You get 20-25 days or hours Annual leave which does not include bank/public hols. They get taken off ur AL. Getting no extra pay during/after lockdown!

They are paid decent wages. Another disgraceful attempt by BBC with a left wing agenda to discredit the government. You really deserve to lose funding.

MPs probably get a pay rise after this, nurses and care assistants will get empty platitudes and fuck all. Stinks.

About one quarter of what you get or less.

At this point they will be paid unsocial hours worked pay, important spend the money to clear virus.

Don't think they deserve you calling them clapped

I am classed as a key worker. I support young adults on the Autism spectrum and get paid minimum wage. Don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon. Before this pandemic we were classed as low skilled workers...interesting

philmcnulty Nowhere near enough.......

You've failed to challenge the Tories on their record for years- and helped get them elected - why not ask the Tories - they all cheered when the made sure nurses didn't get a raise - before voting themselves one. Do some journalism

Citizenship_4_NHS_Workers

My suggestion is the pointless journalism industry should be permanently removed and all there wages go to the NHS workers

Peanuts

I don’t understand why people are clapping them it’s ridiculous That’s their job to help sick people

Deffo due a pay rise!

Plz get away from health insurance. America has this and if you don’t have insurance you go the the state hospital a lot let than the more private ones the nhs is amazing we need to finance it properly nurses have had a 7 yr pay freeze has private sector hell no!

Not as well paid as your journalists but of greater value.

Whatever they agreed to when they signed their contracts.

Not enough.

Pittance

Not enough by a Tory government who only very recently whooped and cheered like school children as the payrise for nhs workers was rejected

Not enough!

Peanuts... the government call them heroes and praise them but they aren’t prepared to pay them a decent wage... nice to see that the government thinks that heroes such as our nurses should be on a low wage

Starting pay is £1,323.39 a month for a band 1 to 2 worker in the NHS, so HCAs, Cleaners or Porters could be on this wage. Imagine that ammount for being on a Covid ward, How many people would put themselves in that position if they had the choice.

Three buttons and a Goofy mask

At least they are being paid!

A fraction of what they are worth.

Fuck all

their market worth

They are NOT PAID ENOUGH! They have OUR FAMILY MEMBERS IN THEIR HANDS......

Not enough. We all think they should be paid more.

No where near as much as a journalist or BBC Presenter think on who’s really essential because it’s time for a culling at the good old beeb

Didn't fancy putting fire fighters on your list?

No the NHS are clapped every week no one cares about factory and warehouse workers

If the conservatives want future votes this is the time to acknowledge these hard working NHS staff by giving then a pay rise. Putting more money in mental health BorisJohnson

Public sector pay freeze for years and a blanket no vote to a pay rise by mps in recent years. The government should be ashamed

I'm a home delivery driver. Delivering essentials to over 100 doors a shift. Currently we have twice that much work and no additional pay. More, the employer expects us to stay over if not finished and doesn't pay for overtime. That's reality.

Nowhere near what they are worth when you think what they have to do and the long hours compared to the likes of some tv and football presenters! It’s about time there was a wage reversal according to what is more of a priority essential work wise

WE AINT PAID ENOUGH!!!👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

Not enough pure and simple

No mention of truck drivers yet again

No one gets paid enough...

Will their wages actually be cut because of the economic fall out?!

And it took a pandemic to make people even consider their worth . Shameful

Please start with forgiving their student loans!!

Not enough x

Nurses doctors definitely deserve a rise in wages however other key workers ie supermarket workers security guards and other key workers won’t get a raise as our jobs arnt valued as worthy by employers .

Very little in comparison to the jobs occupied by top sports stars

The going rate for their job.

RoyalMail CWUnews

The BBC and right wing media including Piers morgan acting like they actually give a 💩, somethings up.

UK key workers are clapped and cheered each week, but what are they paid? Well, whilst many media outlets condemned the government cheering the Public Sector Pay Cap review failing the workers, the BBC said nothing

Not enough

Really? This is for another day, not now for goodness sake

Maybe for the time being, our wages shouldn't be taxed.

Dont forget the Social Workers too dealing with lots and more problems on a daily basis, increase taxes from the high earners

Not enough. Simples!

Paul1Singh

Also whilst i dont grudge others key workers whose unions can get for members but i always found it strange in uk train/tube drivers can be on double nurses wage. I am hoping this crisis will help reset government strategies on wage for key nhs/social care staff

They are not clapped that’s horrible

Not enough. Ask Boris and his parliament pals, also ask why they laughed and cheered when they won the vote not to give them a pay rise.. but now stand there praising the NHS, bunch of fucking hypocrites..

There also seems a need in hospitals i have worked in focus on havin more n more high level staff and middle management who gain credit and promotion over the staff who make hospitals work, or senior mgmt on golden hellos/goodbye when straight into new job extremely frustrating.

I said the same thing about soldiers and was told “then knew what they was signing up for” wonder if that still applies to medical staff?

No where near enough

I believe All Medical people should be paid more . Instead of athletic sports People or Government officials. At least CANADA has Universal Health and Medical Care.

Careful BBC your LW Socialist side is showing again.....,

Bit rude to insult their appearance don’t you think? Especially now of all times.

Nowhere near enough. Needs sorting out

Not as much as those who work for who create news rather than report it. Knowing the salaries of everybody in your dept would really make interesting reading.

Not enough...perhaps some of your highly paid artists and news presenters would like to take a pay cut and put it into the pot for them

Work for hermes.. Delivering double what we use to and yet no bonus of any kind..

Usually minimum way or just over. And a lot have insecure contracts, part flexible contracts that only benefit the employers.

30k a year god id love to be on that

Not as much as bbclaurak GaryLineker etc etc

Not enough and not nearly as much as the bbc pay their biased broadcasters. Why is being on tele worth more than someone helping save lives? You pay too much. Half of the narcissists would pay you to be on. Lineker 😂😂😂 obscene.

philmcnulty Not enough

Got a terrible feeling that once this crisis is over nothing going to change and it will be like nothing happened.

You guys don't know how lucky you are. Try paying over a $1000 month for medical insurance, then have to pay another $3000 -4k before your coverage kicks in. Finally get shit coverage. You guys wouldn't be complaining then over a few quid

I think they're doing an amazing job, I hope they get a pay rise, I hope they better appreciated by many after this pandemic. However let's not pretend that 90% of these clappers gave a toss about the NHS until they needed it!

philmcnulty Too much

Train drivers? Wtf?!

As if the BBC gives a shit when only a few months ago they wanted to make over 75s, who can barely two pence together, pay for TV licences. Oh but they suspended that for now.. What heroes.

Clapping on your doorstep is worthless. They only person that benefits is you. You get to come back inside your safe house, on your comfy sofa, thinking you’ve ‘done your bit’ for the NHS. If at any stage over the past decade you have voted Tory, YOU are actually the problem.

I think they all deserve not just pay rise but a bonus for what they have done for the people in this country💙

Care workers ain't nurses,,,they just mop up piss and shit....and feed the old rice pudding

Not enough.

philmcnulty Bet this wasn’t even a question during WW2 when soldiers went and fought on the front line. Just doing their job NO they were commended

fuck all, m8.

philmcnulty Not enough!

The money is there, but just like in education, it’s distributed incorrectly. The nurses (and teachers) are paid pittance compared to the managers.

Would be more meaningful comapred to MP salaries with raises!

And prison staff?

Pittance

BBC still stirring it 😡

Not enough

You have a great idea, stop the license fee & pay the Nurses your salaries

Nowhere near enough, and customers still speak to retail staff like they are dog poo.

What is GaryLineker paid? And his ''job'' is more important than a key NHS worker is it? I'll wait.

Shut up

Not enough lads.

The same as everyone else who works hard give us a break

Minimum fucking wage.

Pay is a lot higher for nurses in US.

I wonder what the figures for BBC employees are?

Paid enough too eat well most are obese!

The pay for nurses - suspended any increment last few years. They are the least paid compared to other countries. That’s why there is shortage of nurses. Also many seats for nursing are vacant as students not going. The pay for a newly graduate nurse Fulton W is average £1500!

Does anyone think they are paid enough?

Doesn’t everyone see irony of Liniker re tweeting this ? A BBC luvie on 1.75 m a year of tax payers money 30x average nurse pay for 32 days work a year .. That’s the real scandal !

Not enough I assure you take it from someone who knows

We taking just nhs it All key workers ?

Teaching assistants, do not get paid for school holidays, we are also classed as part time, and unlike any other worker we cannot earn any holiday pay at all. So this is pretty much comparing apples with eggs

airheadhell And a lot downgraded under reviews! Our Trust is management top heavy! Our dept had one sister and one manager and now we’ve got 6 managers none of whom are clinical!!!

How can you talk about pay the money you take out of the BBC licence payer are you mentally ill

This is inaccurate. Doctors do not start on £40,000.

We are working for 20% of our wage...we should get the governemnt money aswell bollocks

No where near enough. Let's make this happen and allow our truly amazing heroes the respect they truly earn. NHSMillion x

Not even nearly enough and there’s a whole host of Key workers missing from that list.

danroan Amazon just given £2 per HR pay rise to warehouse staff

Very rude to call key workers clapped. Why I oughta slap you up

ur the only one clapped around here

Have them come to the US where their wage includes conservatives screaming at them and threatening their safety further.

Not enough. Did I guess it right?

Significantly less than many on your WOKE agenda cooperation. I would happily give my BBC licence fee tax to the NHS

The disparity in pay is what irritates me. Council workers with far less accountability and workload than teaching staff earn more. Those who write SEND reports about the work we are doing is school earn more. Where’s the logic?

So... part time workers earn less and highly skilled workers earn more?

I spoke of this weeks ago on Facebook!!!!!!

Crumbs

Every clap is like a joke to me. As if, enjoy the gunfire as crackers. Appreciate people's feelings but this Government is bonkers! Not fit for purpose. Same with the 'Scientific Community'! Pitty! coronavirus Channel4News guardian nytimes cnni COVIDー19 Independent

I'm grateful for our great nurses but if you compare with pay private health workers get, taking into account an NHS pension, sick leave, additional increments etc, I think you'll find they do quite well now since pay increases. I wonder if BBC are little behind the times?

Home carers like my mum, often can't work because of the amount of care they provide, yet are essential for preventing people ending up in Hosp. Carers allowance of £67 per week for providing min 35hrs per week!

Always makes me laugh that average salary figure. 30 grand 😆 your having a laugh. The vast majority of working, full time people in the UK would rip your arm off for that. That's a wage we can only dream of. It's just another example of people who make up numbers have zero clue

I’d want nice work stockings, too. Since i am likely standing for 11 hours in a 12 hour shift! Thanks!

Not enough

This is the kind of moronic article that BBC now publishes whilst being blatantly incorrect. As the father of two recently qualified Doctors, I can assure you that Doctors DO NOT start on a salary of £40K as shown in the graph - more like £28K - FACT

Funny you should mention this. In my line of work we get paid like crap, treated like dogs but all of a sudden when covid19 appeared we became 'essential'. Disgraceful.

£26k pa. and my dear friend has to cremate both parents due to covid19 💔

Raised £700 so far, please share/help if possible

And what about the scandal of family carers? 3 shifts of people took care of my father (Alzheimer's) in a nursing home £1250 a week, home to me providing the same level of 24/7 care £104 per week, no sick time, no holidays, little sleep + the emotional stress. What about us?

Looking at the article it dosnt really tell you much does it, it’s hard to make a judgement without knowing detail but I guess there are many many factors involved, I personally think all emergency workers should have a pay rise and everyone working in this pandemic

A pocket full of thank you’s won’t put food on the table!

Not enough!!

the basic answer to that is - not nearly enough

Most are probably not paid as much as the politicians that block their pay rises along with other key workers in the public sector.

not enough. I'm disappointed the government has not issued an immediate pay rise to at least the nurses and care workers.

Is there anyone here who is genuinely surprised at what key workers are paid ?

Just to be aware that a considerable proportion of keyworkers are not full time workers and are parents/carers meaning they can only work part time ie the wages quoted are for full time staff.

Why don't you do some investigative journalism and do a freedom of information request to the facilities team at the BBC as to what the delivery drivers, cleaners etc are paid?

Their wages. Monthly usually.

£8.72 hour

I'm a carer in the community and I'm on£8.75 an hour. :(.... 60 hours a week too

Key workers in Belgium clapped every night8pm for last 5 weeks. No reminders, no dedicated tv shows, no squaddies on tanks, no journos roaming country interviewing people about clapping - Just a gesture by population. British exceptionalism hard at work it seems. Pay more tax!

Why are train drivers paid a good deal more?

Reading some tweets here and I can't believe people are arguing about money in the middle of this while families are loosing loved ones, ffs get a grip.

This is how they are paid

Says the broadcaster that pays third rate presenters and fifth rate journalists obscene amounts of money.

Consultancy, bureaucracy and a lack of vision simple. It still amazes me how most businesses haven’t learned anything from the Japanese culture when it comes to efficiency 🙈.

Peanuts

A junior doctor is paid about £13/hr. Pretty fucking hilarious considering the entry requirements for medical school, length of training, exorbitant tuition fees and difficulty of the work.

Pay rises need to be in 2 places, a slight rise in bottom line pay and a larger rise in the amount in which you start paying tax, otherwise it will just push prices up. This also protects employers who don’t make huge profits..

Not as much as greedy BBC staff how did the BBC respond to peoples financial crisis it put up the licence fee

Being a bus driver according to this report I'm 33% below the median specified in the report

Peanuts

At least they are paid contrary to millions of others!

BBC anbd other journos need to research the pay grades, note it down and then next to that what they have to pay out each month etc...

Oh dear 😔 BBC what are you doing? We are not stupid.. we know what you have been doing 😔 You saw the votes! But you still campaign against the British people 😔

They should be paid 30phr minimum!!!

As usual the extremists at the OVERPAID BBC are putting money before lives, HAVE they no shame.

Not enough, especially when you consider what some waste of DNA MPs are paid

Go and ask the cleaner or care home assistant both key workers orhow about truck drivers shop assistants

Not as much as BBC staff.

Keyworkers, carers, assistant roles roughly a band 2-4 on NHS pay scale. Range between £16/17K to £24K A lot of these people have dead end degrees also that means to get a higher band a further post grads qualification is needed.

They are Paid a Clapping 👏

Clapping is great but it is a welcome distraction for the Government. It takes people's attention away from thinking about who is responsible booforboris

I don’t clap anymore, it’s patronising rubbish. Provide them with equipment and a decent wage then I’ll clap.

Has the MPs just got a payrise in April of over £2500.....

Ask MesutOzil1088

Yep, how much do you pay Gary Lineker or Graham Norton? Are they worth more? I think not!

Not enough obviously...

The government like all governments will give all workers on the frontline nothing, they will give then take away, at the moment the government will say what we won’t to hear once this is over a leopard never changes its spots,

A lot less than BBC journalists compare with their wages. Who do the public think should earn more journalists or nurse's ?

Not enough !

All are massively underpaid, and that includes care workers, retail staff, porters, cleaners etc etc. Austerity, public sector wage freezes and full employment means that not just underpaid, undervalued too. Until now.

Depends on what you mean by key workers? If working for nhs yes pensions sick pay . As contact cleaner probably not with no benefits or working at asda etc .

'Over-worked and under-paid'

A lot less than jeernalists, union officials and Labour Party staffers. 🥺

We all know nurses and doctors, we have people visiting hospitals, we all know they are empty, we all know people with critical surgery delays, we all know they are dying, we all know that you know, we all know you couldn't care less, WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH.

Don’t like it, find a private job, forcing public sector equivalents up.

borismustgo

I think 30k for nursing is very good. I know people who work in NHS and they're very well paid. They never whinge as it's not an issue.

TLDR: not enough, in many cases.

I pay £150 odd a year for this. And Laura of course.

Just like the NHS, NOT ENOUGH

Not a living wage, undervalued and dismissed. Our MP gave themselves a nice pay rise and voted down one for NHS staff then clapped and cheered about it, the vote was along party lines, Conservatives won an empty victory at the expense of our NHS, again.

As a health worker I’d rather get paid more than get clapped to be honest.

Less per hour than that CARE badge!
