Pubs in England are allowed to reopen from Saturday, but some venues are keeping their doors shut.

Back in normal times, on match days, the pavement outside the Tollington Arms would be as crowded as a Tube station. The pub is right next to the Emirates stadium, Arsenal's home ground, and is a popular sports pub.The government has given pubs in England the go ahead to reopen from 4 July if they follow a strict set of social distancing rules, but last week the Tollington's manager, Martin Whelan, posted a message on social media announcing it would stay closed.

"We cannot in good conscience open the pub when contracting a deadly virus is still possible under these guidelines," he tweeted.

kaleandkind Someone with some practical sense. Good to hear. Patience is so important at this time

Good to see at least one sensible person in the country

Typical. The BBC focus on a pub not opening.

matthaig1 Bravo to you. 👏👏👏

With you 100% You would think the lockdown ended 4 weeks ago its stupid and very dangerous

matthaig1 I drank here for over 10 years. It was 35 metres from my front door. When M and L say no you go. Arsenal TheTollington matthaig1 10DowningStreet

People are idiots, the uk is probably the worst country for alcohol abuse.

How you gonna have a brawl then!!?

Stop your project fear agenda.

TheTollington Hopefully for this stance, you will be fully supported when the time is right to re-open. A heartfelt decision taken for all the right reasons

Honestly are you that desperate for a pint in a pub? 😂 I’d rather sit at home it’s cheaper ! PubsReopening PubsOpening pubsopen pubsreopen

Well done, good to see some businesses putting lives before profit.

I need my fix of getting smashed so I can sleep around and blame it on the alcohol.

TheTollington Attention seeking. Don’t open, that’s your choice. Start paying full wages to your staff and watch your tune change . People have taken advantage of this furlough

Block19Anon Arsenal that

To all the fear mongers, keyboard virologists, and health experts out there. Just fuk off, lick yourselves up forever and die plz

'A deadly disease' that only effects a small number of people. What an idiot. I suppose it doesnt matter as no pub is going to be able to survive at half capacity and with increasing costs and eventually having fewer customers because people will get sick of booking and queuing.

And yet today BBC News are doing features on a guy looking for open pubs at 6am, and intervening as he's 'only' on his third Guinness at 11am (at a pub that didn't start serving until 10am!)

TheTollington It's a bloody shame someone with a brain and a conscience like you doesn't own a massive chain of pubs. Rather than Worzel Gummidge alikes I could mention. Refreshing to see. Hope your pub has 2,000 customers every day when this shite is over.

As a paramedic I've got used to the decrease in pavement pizzas. Before this day is over they will have returned. ☹️

DrJennyRose Pubs and bars...

Look its simple, if you don't think its right for the pubs to open then stay at home. However do not tell me what l can do. Cheers 🍺🍺

TheTollington You are acting with common sense and great integrity.

Should probably stop taking furlough money from the tax payer then.

TheTollington henshawj

Why does the BBC consider this to be news? There are many pubs choosing not to open today for a variety of reasons. This landlord feels it isn’t safe. The scientists have said that it can be - are the BBC suggesting we should listen to the pub landlord over the scientists?

i think pubs opening is big risk

Good for them. Well done.

Fucking ........boooooooo

The very people pushing for pub reopening are probably the same people who think it's fun to take horse tranquilliser.

And why not? 'We' need our institution to open up i very much miss late-the night brawls n vomiting!

TheTollington I hope you go bust

My local staying shut today and that decision will ensure my loyalty for many many years to come. We had a local catch covid19 and almost die early on in the pandemic. They not the only one here too Seems to be the pubs opening are 'wanker' pubs anyway,

We can we can fk off.

There’s a surprise, you found disagreement.

Yup. So what about bad conscience then or are you still taking the furlough money?

An establishment which serves alchohol as it’s main source of revenue worried about patrons health. Lol 😂

because they have functioning consciences unlike the Tory government

And so the media war against the pubs today starts, how many more negative headlines about pubs should we expect just so you can undermine the government?

I do get angry with Johnson, he call on us for 'restraint' but will not say that what Cummings and now his own father did was wrong, all it took was a simple 'sorry' from the PM or Cummings but no, so 1,200,519 have signed to get Cummings sack and still the number is going up.

What a brave and wise decision to have made. This is the type of Leadership we should have had from this 'one trick Brexit pony' Party. We have so many deaths because this Johnson Party is full of inexperienced yes men and women put there to lick Cummings ar*s

might have guessed the BBC would pick up on this story. Not so the miscounting of more than 30,000 positive coronavirus tests though, that seems to have been missed. That too is no surprise from the Whitehall controlled Project Fear.

I'm not surprised that they don't want to open seeing that lot standing outside all grouped together, I knew people would do that, they can't bloody wait to drink and lean on the bar. Id let them stand there all day!

Some of our local pubs in our town has said the same. I just hope that those who do go to the pubs that are open are sensible today and respect the staff and new rules that are in place.

As if anyone was forcing them to open.

Let don't start judging... If people are responsible and ”stay alert ” it shouldn't be a bad idea after all ... It's time to get the country moving forward again... We cannot sit back forever peoplelivelihoodmatters

Well done.

Should be forced to pay his staff full wages. It's not their fault he's no refusing to open.

English govt choosing a Saturday to reopen? Thank heavens the Westminster mob has less of a say in Scotland these days. Please do not travel to Scotland. We are still in lockdown here so show some respect.

If you don’t want to go don’t, the rest of the world wants to start living again but with care. Project fear needs to stop now

If anyone is worried by the risk of pubs opening, can I suggest you don't go to one. That's what I'm doing. Table service and restricted numbers, the pubs can police that. Any hassle, close the doors.

Same place will be pissing and moaning about laying off staff in a few weeks.

Pub afraid to open because the football is on..

Well done you managed to find a vehicle for your narrative.

Lucky for them if they can afford not to open!!

Great, the pubs who are owned by lefty tossers will stay shut so we know to avoid them in future.

Think they will take a different view once the furlough scheme is over

Let me think on it while I sips me beer

Common sense decision well done. You're quite right, far too early and dangerous as we're still in a vulnerable position with not knowing the true facts from the government.

If only American pubs and bars were of the same conscience.

Go bankrupt then

No pubs should be reopening yet.

Opening a pub in such times is lack sensibility and sensitivity. Good decision.

It is safe for them to open now, they are very ignorant about the situation.

All the pubs should follow suit it would save lives and embarrass the government

Great, but let those who do want to open up chose to do so.

Should permanently close 50% of the pubs and work on the alcohol abuse issue in the UK

'Super Saturday' washout with a month of rain to fall in 24 hours as pubs reopenThe news comes as pubs, bars and restaurants across England will be allowed to reopen on Saturday, July 4th. The wet weather looks set to ruin plans for those hoping to enjoy a drink in a beer garden. Thank god for that It won’t actually be that wet, but any wet is good news in helping to keep the virus at bay and NOT raising glasses in celebration of the apparent “success” 60,000 deaths, hmtreasury
