In September, global maternal health expert Wendy Powell launched the ByMySide campaign. Wendy tells GLAMOUR of the inspiration behind the campaign, its message, her hopes for its impact, and how you can get involved.

In September, global maternal health expert Wendy Powell launched the #ByMySide campaign alongside her medically recommended digital antenatal and postpartum support platform,. The campaign seeks to raise awareness of the crucial importance of birthing partners as restrictions continue to see women attend antenatal scans and endure labour without a birthing partner across the UK.

In 2007 I woke up from the anaesthetic unable to feel my body. I had just endured hours of life-saving surgical intervention following a severe haemorrhage after the birth of my second child. It was then that I properly learned of theimplications of childbirth, as well as the physical pains and changes to our body. I also learned of the crucial importance of having a birthing partner by my side, in my case my husband, throughout the entire ordeal.

The #ByMySide campaign is an homage to this critical importance of birthing partners, whose role far supersedes that of a visitor. Birthing partners advocate for our choices, they are a voice to convey our fears and anxieties when perhaps we are unable to, and are an emotional support pillar in the case of bad news or complications. Pregnant women are extremely vulnerable during the pandemic when it comes to their mental health.

mothers need advocation and close support by somebody they trust as crucial supporters in our journey.
