Deputy leader’s comments come as polls show voters trust neither Corbyn nor May on Brexit

Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson has called on his party to “embrace” European elections in May, as well as the possibility of a general election, saying that if it goes into either contest pledging a confirmatory referendum it can beat the Tories.

tom_watson Labour need to ditch JC & bring their excellent back benchers to the fore if they want to appeal beyond their own membership. With the right team, leadership & policies they should be walking all over the Tories. But it's not happening. JC as PM? I don't think so.

If Labour had a leader with brains + an actual plan they wuda won last one....Labour under Corbyn is like a car jacked up on blocks no wheels going nowhere....as Corbyn waffles on....New leader for 2nd New Labour ..required asap..looney left strangling life out of Labour ..Sad !

Not with jeremycorbyn in charge

Essential, Labour must NOT go into any election with the current level of indecision - “we have no one to vote for” say my previous Labour leaning voter friends peoplesvote tom_watson

Another indication that positions about Brexit are all politics and little to do with what's the best outcome.

A bit like it did last week then.

tom watson should say something to help his party instead of hindering it.

Why don't you get rid of Corbyn. You've got plenty of talent on your side.

KattyKayBBC Corbyn is part of the Brexit Leave faction of Labour. You just need one party that will RevokeArticle50; not another referendum. Neither major party has one position on the issue.

Only with a new leader

Really surely they would lose support in many of their Northern Constituencies

No one will win in next elections as people are sick and tired of you slimy politicians. The way you have ignored the people’s vote the real one. What next offer everybody free smarties to vote for you you think the voters are thick. You can offer what you want you won’t give it.

Go on, reappoint Tony as leader and you’ll romp home🤪

SO OBVIOUS TO EVERYONE IN COUNTRY EXCEPT MOST OF LABOUR FRONT BENCH.

I think they should also have a pact with Lib Dems to not compete with each other in Tory seats so as not to split the centre-left vote. I know Corbyn is not everybody's cup of tea, nor is he mine, but we need to end austerity. A bit of redistribution of wealth is sorely needed.

A general election will be about more than one issue tom_watson needs to wake up

if you do you get my Vote

Remove Corbyn, replace with Starmer, back 2nd referendum, 20 point lead and massive majority!!

Now let's ask Sherlock.

Deluded! It must be the Westminster/London bubble thing.... In the next election, we shall have a Brexit party, Lib Dems (always being a remain party), UKIP diluting the Labour vote even more than the Tories in Leave areas. We also have CHuk party. How can he be so certain?

You won't get my vote

Find something else to write about. Politicians have invent this job of talking about nothing and be paid centuries ago. They have nothing to do with people and the country, why you bother writing about ear pressure - their only outcome? Play Pavarotti!

...and, after all, that's all that really matters (sigh)

Isn’t this similar to Jacob_Rees_Mogg and BorisJohnson voting for theresa_may’s deal? An act of desperation I think?

The question is whether Corbyn as PM is worth a new EU referendum. I am convinced that for many centrist voters the answer is no. Brexit uk

Well, this kind of logic only disclosed the opportunism politicians have instead of a genuine opinion. And what people will not vote for is plain opportunism.

If they don't they've lost my vote.

if Tories and Labour would get another referendum they would beat anyone in stupidity and destroy the country...

So - it's all about winning an election! Say whatever it takes and forget integrity.

Sadly not with jeremycorbyn at the helm. The decent thing to do, for party but ultimately the nation is to stand aside to give labour a fighting chance. The fact labour remains behind the tories in the polls speaks volumes. Worst government in my lifetime.

Bourgeoisie out in full force on this thread. It wouldn't vote for Brown. It wouldn't vote for Miliband. It detests Corbyn. Wants a Labour leader who'll rule on its behalf. Someone like Tony Blair. A UK with 4 bourgeois-led parties & a neutered working-class is its solution.

Maybe, but unlikely a single issue like brexit would entirely define a GeneralElection and middle ground voters like me might struggle to support the idea of a Corbyn govt despite the poor pickings elsewhere.

At last! A UKLabour leader who talks sense! Make this man leader of the party

Have they only just worked this out? The frustrating party.

There’d only be one good reason for an election & that’s if one party at least backs giving the people a vote on any final deal or to remain As it stands with both Conservatives and UKLabour leadership desperate to force Brexit through there’s no difference or choice

Without Corbyn , perhaps.

Out of touch with the people

Corbyn openly announced he would ignore the referendum result, surrender the UK's bargaining position and accept whatever terms the EU wanted. He's also advocated policies largely identical to those adopted by Chavez and Maduro in Venezuela. Who would vote for him?

And If Labour won the next General Election would it be accepted by the Losers or would they demand a Peoples Vote to decide again hoping to change the result

You'll need a stronger leader - Corbyn is too wishy washy

There are millions of Labour voters who want a 2nd vote. What happens if they don't vote in the GE? Labour is taking it for granted that they want rid of the Tories so bad they accept Brexit from Labour.

You need to start reading your memos Tom, where have you been?

As much a dislike Corbyn and his Stalinist strategists, if they backed another referendum, I’d vote for them.

With Corbyn you won't beat them anyway he is your kryptonite

What is this? Finally backing the conference motion? Finally backing what Corbyn has been saying? Latest opinion polls got anything to do with it? labour tom_watson

If you had nearly anyone else other than Corbyn in charge yes possibly

I think this is right. If Labour vote through a Customs Union on Monday they’ll get slaughtered in an election though as they’ll lose Remainers and Leavers

Hmmm.

Great putting party before country, disgraceful. Just lost my vote.

Former Tom Watson adviser accuses Labour of racial discriminationSarah Goulbourne tells tribunal she felt she was made redundant due to her ethnicity white lefties encouraged 'people of colour' to play the race card and thats exactly what theyre going to do. i hope you choke on it 😀😀 Funny way of wording it when it seems it is Tom Watson's CLP and therefore his office that is being accused of racism but I suppose the guardian always wants to infer that it's all Jeremy Corbyn's fault. Labour still has questions to answer on renationalisation plans | Nils PratleyCBI director-general sets up potential clash, urging party to ‘work with, not against’ business Dear me Apparently the Conservatives and Libdems have no questions to answer on the wholesale privatisation of MOD, Social Care, Health, Housing, Transport... While burdening us with the heaviest personal tax burden on record. But sure, you attack the only party who can make a difference its a valid point, the cost will be huge and people may be concerned where the money is going to come from. Of course the Tory's will say higher tax's will pay for it, thus election time could be difficult.
