In April, it was fined £2.1m over illegal water discharge activities and contravening environmental permit conditions.. Pennon said it planned to invest £750m over two years to improve its environmental standards and water treatment methods.Pennon, along with other utilities, have faced fierce criticism for their environmental and service failings while paying high dividends to shareholders. Pennon is to pay £112m to shareholders, 11 per cent higher than last year’s payout.
Susan Davy, Pennon Group chief executive, said they’re facing ‘significant environmental challenges’ who called the decision shameless and a “slap in the face” for communities living with hosepipe bans or the consequences of sewage overflows. The company said it was less than a third of what it was spending on improving environmental standards. Thirty years ago, nearly half of all household and business sewage in South West Water’s region was untreated and discharged directly into the sea, Ms Davy said. Pennon had already invested more than £13bn in upgrading sewage treatment works., but at a lower rate than cost increases. South West Water bills would rise by 0.8 per cent; Bristol Water by 5.5 per cent.
