The decision to drop the Washington name came following growing pressure from several sponsors, including FedEx, who own the $8 million -a-year naming rights to the team’s stadium.The ‘Redskins’ nickname was given to the franchise in 1933 when the team was based in Boston.A statement from the team read: ‘Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.

Earlier this month, FedEx sent a private letter to Washington warning that if the ‘Redskins’ name was kept they would pull the sponsorship from their stadium.
