NFL side Washington Redskins will officially retire the team’s ‘Redskins’ nickname and logo in response to pressure from the Native American community and sponsors.
The decision to drop the Washington name came following growing pressure from several sponsors, including FedEx, who own the $8 million -a-year naming rights to the team’s stadium.The ‘Redskins’ nickname was given to the franchise in 1933 when the team was based in Boston.A statement from the team read: ‘Today, we are announcing we will be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon completion of this review.
Earlier this month, FedEx sent a private letter to Washington warning that if the ‘Redskins’ name was kept they would pull the sponsorship from their stadium.
