First the seaside town was hit by large volumes of sewage being pumped into the sea, now a landfill site that can accept 250,000 tonnes of waste per year has been reopened causing a terrible stink

A large landfill site that had been closed for seven years has been reopend in Fleetwood, Lancashire The smell hits you like a brick wall as soon as you step out of your car in Fleetwood – it’s like rotten eggs and onions.

Residents and Fleetwood town councillors have been left furious. Many believed the 63 hectare site next to the River Wyre had been closed permanently in 2017 and the long-term plan was for it to be restored as part of the adjoining nature reserve.

“My seven-year-old daughter has asthma and she’s been really ill, my mum has COPD and last night she was sick because of the smell.Jess Brown, right, is leading a group of residents who want action “If TRAL are not able to bring the site into compliance quickly we will consider regulatory enforcement to deliver steps needed to prevent further impact on the community,” the EA said.

Transwaste Ltd has reopened the landfill site seven years after it was capped releasing a terrible stench The firm says it has already taken steps to try and reduce odour problems and will “continue to work closely” with the Environment Agency. “People have moved to Fleetwood because they decided it was a nice place to live. But we are at the end of a peninsula and we’ve always been left behind, not just by this government.

Angela Thomas bought her house in Harbour Village, a new build estate just a mile away from the landfill site in July 2021. “I hope the company will comply with the recommendations and the odour will be minimised, but it is positive news that enforcement action is on the table if they do not.
