The portrait was discovered after an x-ray was taken of another of Vincent van Gogh's artworks - and it appeared on the back of the canvas.

The layers of cardboard and glue were thought to have been applied ahead of an exhibition in the early 20th century.

While it may be possible to separate the two pieces, the process of removing the glue and cardboard will require delicate conservation work. Research is taking place as to how that can be done without harming Head of a Peasant Woman.People will be able to see the sketch as an X-ray image through a specially crafted lightbox.
