Viewers were left on the edge of their seats during the latest episode of 24 Hours in A&E where hospital staff rushed to save a man's leg after it was crushed by a lorry. On Monday, March 25, viewers saw HGV driver Chris rushed to Queen's Medical Centre after a 12-tonne lorry reversed over his leg whilst he was knelt working on his own vehicle.
The doctor was able to establish a pulse in the leg, but, as the episode went on, more and more concern was raised over his leg and whether Chris had developed Compartment Syndrome. A leg has four compartments in it, and they can only swell to a certain size before the blood supply is cut off and amputation becomes necessary.
The incident had happened at around 5:30 am and his partner, Heather, was at her first day back at work after being isolated for coronavirus>Covid when she found out. She said: "I didn't know exactly what had happened, so I just had to sit there and wait to find out how bad it was." Chris was taken for an emergency operation and at the end of the episode viewers were informed that he had to stay in hospital for ten weeks and have a further five operations. However, the team were able to save his leg.
Theatre nurse Christine was also shown throughout the episode, and she helped 65-year-old Elizabeth from The Meadows. Elizabeth had suffered a headwound after she fell whilst cleaning a pub and was brought into hospital by one of her daughters, Tia.
